It’s raining in quite an impressive manner both in the valleys and on Mt. Hood today, and shall continue to rain and rain and rain through early Thursday morning. In a very smart call, both Timberline and Meadows cried “uncle” and closed for the day today. Meadows will be closed Tuesday and Wednesday too. Timberline hasn’t announced future plans yet. Meadows is, however, hoping to open for the season Thursday, assuming the Pineapple Express permits. Here’s your forecast, and you can decide when they can/should open! Continued after the chart.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast, continued…
Today looks wet. The snow level will be at 8500′ this morning and 10,000′ this evening. Mt. Hood will receive approximately 4” of rain between this morning and 4pm today. Then there will be a break in the precip until midnight or so, with another 1” or so falling tonight. Wind today will be WSW 45 early, rising to a ridiculous W 70 this afternoon and backing off to WSW 50 overnight.
Tomorrow, Tuesday looks showery during the day with the snow level at 10,000′-11,000′ all day long. Heavy rain picks up again around 4pm, with 4” or so falling by Wednesday morning. Yes, you did just read four inches! Wind tomorrow will be WSW 55 early, rising steadily throughout the day to WSW 70-80 overnight. Whoa.

See below for details.
Wednesday starts off with the snow level at 10,000′. The snow level will fall to 4500′ midday, and rise to 7500′ late in the evening and dropping back to 4500′ after midnight. Models suggest the precip will back off during the day and pick up again after midnight. Mt. Hood will get .5” rain in the morning, with maybe an inch of snow at the tail end of that. Then there will be sunshine during the day with clouds in the evening and precip after midnight. This later round of precip will start as rain and end up with an inch or two of snow, at best, by Thursday morning. Wind on Wednesday will be WSW 80 early, W 45 mid-morning and SWS 30 in the evening, picking up to WSW 50-60 after midnight.
Thursday sees the snow level at 4500′ in the morning, 3500′ midday, and 5000′ in the evening. There will be snow flurries during the day for 1-3” of new snow. Looks like we’ll see very heavy snowfall on Friday with the snow level at 5000′. Saturday’s system also looks powerful, but will likely start as rain and switch to snow. Sunday carries the potential for significant snow accumulation.

Gorge Wind Forecast
We have light east wind this morning, and that will change midday as a weather system (one of many this week) swings across the Cascades. In the afternoon, we’ll have squalls of west wind at 23-26+ all through the entire Gorge, with 26-30 possible for short periods of time. Tomorrow looks like W 5-10 all day pretty much everywhere except for a chance of 13-16 at Arlington in the afternoon. Wednesday looks like gusty W 23-26+ early, 30ish midday, and W 10-13 in the afternoon. Best bet for steady wind will be anywhere east of the low clouds, probably east of Mosier. Water temp is 44 degrees. If you plan to get in the river, be prepared for lots of debris (honestly, it’s not a great idea) from flooding rivers.
Random Morning Thoughts
I often wish I could speak cat. It’s pretty frustrating to not be able to understand what Strava wants when she’s sitting next to me meowing.
In the same way, I think many of us wish we could understand human better. There are many communication styles, and not only do they vary across individuals, they vary across cultures. Culture, by the way, doesn’t just mean country/ethnicity of origin; it also means region of origin, family of origin, personal history of origin.
One easy way to know that you’re not speaking the same language as someone is if they keep repeating themselves. We repeat when we don’t feel heard. Our reaction, often, when people repeat themselves, is to get frustrated with them. I wonder sometimes if that frustration is really about the other person, or if we are unconsciously frustrated that we aren’t giving the person what they’re needing…
Anyway, the next time you’re involved in a conversation where someone is saying the same thing over and over, acknowledge that you may not be speaking the same language. Let the person know you want to understand. Ask them to rephrase what they are saying. If they can’t, repeat the salient points back to them. Or just make a guess at what they need (for example, I’m going to find a string for my cat, because I think she might want to play) and offer it up.
We might be speaking English together, but we’re not necessarily speaking the same language. Keep that in mind, and your communication with others will become smoother and less frustrating. Real communication is awesome. Have an awesome day.

Gorge Weather Forecast
It’s pouring. It’s been pouring all night. As a matter of fact, I’m writing this at 7:51am (how did it get so late?!?) and we’ve had .82” of rain since midnight. We’ve also had 10.47” for the water year, putting us a full 2” over the average. So much, so far, for the warm and dry El Nino. Maybe it will show up later? Also, there are flood watches posted. Here’s where you can watch the level on the Hood, although it might be more fun to just go look at it in person!
Anyway, expect heavy rain through mid-afternoon, a break in the evening, and then another round of rain (not so heavy) after midnight. Temps will be in the low 40’s this morning and the low 50’s this afternoon. Light wind early, squally westerlies this afternoon, 99% chance of rainbows!
Tomorrow starts off rainy, becomes showery, and then becomes very, very, very rainy starting mid-afternoon. Temps tomorrow will be in the low 50’s early and the upper 50’s (holy mid-winter heat wave, Batman) in the afternoon. It’ll be off-the-charts muggy during the day. Light wind. 99% chance of rainbows.
Wednesday starts off rainy or showery, dries out midday for some sunshine, and returns to rainy after midnight. Temps Wednesday will be right around 50 degrees all day long. Strong west wind fades in the afternoon, and there’s a 99% chance of rainbows.
Looking ahead… Thursday looks showery, Friday looks quite rainy, and Saturday looks wet.
White Sprinter Van of the Day
Road and Mountain Biking
No, please no. Please don’t do it, not on the trails. There are lots of awesome spin classes around here, there are lots of awesome gravel roads, and there are plenty of paved roads. Just not trails right now. See, if you do, you’ll do lots of damage, and then people will spend time repairing trails, not building new trails. You’d rather have more trails, right? So, don’t ride in the mud!
