Sunday. Anyone out there want to compose a Pineapple Express song so we can all sing in the rain together this week?

It is, happily, snowing on Mt. Hood this morning. We’re not going to call this powder snow, oh no. Not with the temps right at freezing. But at least we have white stuff falling from the sky, not wet stuff. We’ll see enough of that wet stuff this week, so enjoy the snow today while…

Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast, continued…

We’ll see steady snowfall this morning, with the sky clearing late morning. Clouds move in this afternoon and precip starts up again by 7pm. The snow level today will be 5000′ this morning, dropping to 4000′ by midday. As the next system moves in, we’ll see the snow level rise from 4000′ to 6500′ by midnight and 8000′ by tomorrow morning. This means we’ll see .2-.3” water value (WV) with this morning’s system, for 1-3” of new snow. Then we’ll see 2” WV between 7pm today and 4am tomorrow. It’s likely we’ll see 2-4” of snow before we see a switch to rain by 10pm. After that: 1.5”+ rain. Wind today will be SW 40 early and WSW 60 overnight, dropping to WSW 35 by tomorrow morning.

Tomorrow looks really, really wet, with heavy rain in the morning, a break in the afternoon (maybe) and lighter rainfall overnight. The snow level tomorrow will be 8000′ in the morning, 10,000′ midday, and 8500′ overnight. As of right now, it looks like we’ll see 3-4” of rain (and models tend to underestimate these systems) between 4am and 4pm, followed by another 1” between midnight and 4am. Wind tomorrow will be WSW 35-40 early, rising to W 60 in the afternoon.

Tuesday looks showery during the day with heavy rainfall Tuesday night. The snow level will be 9000′-10,000′ for much of the day, falling to 6500′ after midnight. We’ll see rain showers during the day for a currently unspecified amount of rain (as of yet), with a couple inches of rain overnight (assuming the models don’t change). Wind Tuesday will be WSW 50 early and WSW 65 in the afternoon and overnight.

As of right now, it looks like we’ll see heavy rain Wednesday morning followed by a couple inches of snow at the back edge of the storm system (maybe). As of right now, models suggest the possibility for heavy snow on Thursday followed by heavy rain on Saturday. That’s a very long way out to be hazarding guesses, so let’s just wait and see!

Gorge Wind Forecast

There’s just a light easterly breeze through the Gorge this morning with an easterly gradient of .07. What easterlies we have will fade to light and variable wind by this afternoon. Tomorrow starts off with light and variable wind and picks up to gusty 13-16 in the eastern Gorge in the afternoon with up-and-down 10-13 in the western Gorge. Tuesday looks light and variable all day. It’s possible we’ll see some stronger west wind both Wednesday and Thursday afternoon.

Random Morning Thoughts

We have a week of very heavy rainfall coming up, and unless you’re silly like me and are making plans to run in the Pineapple Juice, you might be looking for a way to entertain yourself.

Here’s a fun game you can play: It’s called “Explore your Neural Networks”! This game is based on the theory that experiences (etc) are stored in linked neurons. For example, your concept of “barking dog” may be linked to many things – ‘dog licks face’, ‘dog food, yum’, ‘doggy love’. And those things may be linked to others – ‘dog food, yum’ may be linked to ‘ice cream, yum’.

If you want to explore your unique network, close your eyes and bring to mind an image or sensation. Be present. Be mindful. Don’t drift around. Really immerse yourself in this thing that sparked your curiosity. Then just wait and see what comes up next. Say “hi” to that thing, and really be present with it – stay in contact with it – turn way inside yourself – and if your thoughts pull you away, come back to the object of your study. Really sink into it. And see what comes up next. Say hi to the next thing. Repeat those four steps. They are known as the Hakomi 4-step, by the way, and are usually done with therapist and client. However, I like to play with them internally too in service of self-understanding. =)

This isn’t just letting your mind wander. This is mindful study of what arises. You must focus to make this work. It’s an interesting process to see what’s linked to what inside your head. You’ll likely be surprised, horrified, amused, delighted, or any number of emotions. You’ll learn abut yourself and why you do things. You may even get insight into the causes of some of your suffering. For example, if “ice cream, yum” happens to be linked in some way with “mom thinks I’m fat and doesn’t love me”, you’re likely to feel guilt or shame after eating ice cream.

And once you understand this, you have the opportunity to change it and really enjoy ice cream!

So… have fun. Enjoy learning more about yourself. You are awesome, and deserve to know yourself better. Have an awesome day!

Gorge Weather Forecast

We are headed into a period of pretty impressive rain. No, yesterday’s .5” of rain in the Gorge was NOTHING compared to what we’re going to see this week. In case you were wondering, the Gorge has received 9.2” of rain since October. The average is 8.2”. We’re about to take that average out to six-sigma range. Expect today to be a warmup, with rain showers this morning, partly cloudy sky midday, and heavy rain starting around 7pm for at least .5” overnight. Temps will be in the upper 30’s early and the mid 40’s this afternoon. Light wind. 99% chance of rainbows.

Tomorrow starts out with heavy rain and continues to rain heavily through the afternoon with lighter rain overnight. We should get at least 1”, making for great opportunities to sing in the rain. I suppose it’s possible we’ll see some sunbreaks mixed in… Anyway, temps will be in the upper 30’s early and the low 50’s in the afternoon. Light wind with squally periods possible late. 48% chance of rainbows.

Tuesday looks showery during the day with heavy rain starting up again late Tuesday night. Temps will be in the low 40’s early and the mid 50’s (that’s going to feel downright tropical) in the afternoon. Light wind early, moderate wind late, 99% chance of rainbows. It looks like we may see some sunbreaks on Wednesday as the bulk of the precip shifts north. But then again, the storm path could change between now and then…

Road and Mountain Biking

Your mountain bike (and the trails) will be happier if you choose not to ride right now. For those of you who rode Mobius during the freeze-thaw cycle, know that you did irreparable damage. The trail is now cupped, and water will run down it instead of off it. Fixing that kind of damage takes an incredible amount of time and energy. Please don’t ride muddy trails, especially freeze-thaw muddy trails. Your need to ride in the mud is not greater than the community’s need for a well-functioning trail system. Take the opportunity to jog or hike instead! Or perhaps take your bike and ride some gravel roads. We have lots of those!

Upcoming Events

It’s Sunday Funday in the Gorge today. There are a couple of free yoga classes: 9am at Yoga Samadhi with Crystal (I think this class is pretty awesome!) and 4pm at Pure Yoga in The Dalles (never been, but I hear that place is awesome too). Looking ahead to tomorrow, there’s free Tai Chi at the Mt. Hood Town Hall at 1pm. Then at 6:30pm, there’s free yoga at the Town Hall, free Zumba at the Parkdale Community Center, and free yoga at Yoga Samadhi. Tuesday night at 6:30 is the last night our Pacific Hermitage monastic friends will be around for a couple of months. If you’d like to meditate with them (and 25-30 community members), be at Yoga Samadhi at 6:30 Tuesday. It’s lovely, and I highly recommend checking it out for a breath of peace and serenity in your life.

Have an awesome day today!

Temira
