Friday. Let’s shred Mt. Hood this weekend!

It looks like our local ski resorts are playing the “me first” and “me too” game: Timberline’s conditions page says they are going to try and run Bruno on Saturday and Sunday from 9am to 4pm. Meadows is planning on running Buttercup from 3pm to 7pm on Saturday in conjunction with their Pray for Snow…

Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

So please take a moment to click one of the buttons below. Donate $19.99 or more (how much does this forecast enhance your life?) and get the email in your inbox. Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast, continued…

It will be a sunny weekend, for the most part. It’s sunny up there right now, with the free air freezing level (FAF) at 500′. Temps at 5000′ are in the mid 20’s. High clouds will move in this afternoon, and the FAF will rise to 1000′. In other words, not much change today. The wind will be NE 20 early and E 10 later.

Tomorrow looks clear and sunny with a developing inversion. The free air freezing level will be at 10,000′ with temps at 5000′ in the mid 30’s early and the mid 40’s in the afternoon. Light wind. Expect sunny wand warm mountain weather on Sunday with the FAF at 11,000′ and temps at 5000′ in the 40’s.

The next round of snow moves in on Monday night. As of right now, the precip looks to start early afternoon with the snow level at 5000′, falling to 500′ in the evening. There’s approximately 1” of water value with this system, meaning Mt. Hood is likely to receive 8-12” of new snow.

Gorge Wind Forecast

It’s all easterlies, all the time, for the next three days. Expect the wind to pick up to 40-50 at Rooster by this afternoon. Tomorrow looks like 40-50 early and 30-40 in the afternoon. Sunday starts with 30-40 and backs off to 25-30 in the afternoon. Knock of 5-10 for Stevenson. Dress warmly. Sail with a buddy. Have fun.

Random Morning Thoughts

I have come to the conclusion this morning that cats are the source of much of the world’s love. Here’s my logic: you know that feeling in your chest that arises when you randomly run into someone you love? That warmth? That sensation that your innards are going to explode with happiness, or at least expand beyond your body?

Well, a warm kitty lying on your chest can create that same inner warmth. And our bodies are easily confused by perceived stimuli. So, I have come to the conclusion that having a cat lie on your chest can encourage your embodied nervous system to feel love (even if you can’t).

By this logic, of course, any warm object could do the same thing: dog, squirrel, heating pad, cherry pie, thermos of cocoa, or another human being. Cats, however, have the advantage of giving you a purr-massage while they warm your heart.

Play with this sometime: warm up your chest, and warm up your heart. Or better yet, just hang around people you love and bring up these feelings naturally. Have an awesome day, and don’t forget to do something as silly as this random thought!

Gorge Weather Forecast

Yesterday’s weather models insisted that we’d see clear sky this morning, but they were very wrong. We have Nothing this morning with thin high clouds above. Maybe the nothing will burn off today. Maybe not. Expect temps in the upper 30’s this morning (the Nothing protected us from dipping below freezing) and low 40’s this afternoon with sub-freezing temps tonight. East wind.

Tomorrow, given the massive developing inversion, will likely have a Nothing cloud too. Temps are forecast to be in the upper 20’s early and the low 40’s in the afternoon. East wind. Sunday also will likely see Nothing, with temps in the upper 20’s early and the mid 40’s in the afternoon.

This morning’s model runs have backed off on the chance of significant snowfall in the Gorge Monday night. The precip is coming in earlier, when the air will be warmer. And it looks like the wind will switch to west earlier than predicted, warming the low-elevation air mass. Late Monday night and early Tuesday morning still look tricky, but we might sneak by with rain. Stay tuned.

No rainbows for the next 72 hours.

Road and Mountain Biking

As of right now, this very minute, Post is too muddy to ride. Whoopdee is also too muddy, and there’s snow up there. You can expect snow on all the trails above 1000′ today… maybe not a lot of snow, but some. Speaking of snow, we’re about to go into a period of overnight sub-freezing temps. That means you will need to ask yourself the following before you ride: “Did it freeze last night? Is it above freezing now?” If the answer to both those questions is “yes”, you will do significant trail damage by riding thawed tread. In other words, do not ride Syncline, Whoopdee, the Kleeway, or any other trail that is not under the forest canopy if it was below freezing the previous night. You’re better off riding Nestor, Mitchell Ridge via Post Canyon Road, or perhaps the Kitchen Sink.

Upcoming Events

There are work parties scheduled for both Falls Creek (8am, Saturday and Sunday at Backwoods Brewing) and Cooks Meadow (9am Saturday at Little John Snopark) this weekend, weather permitting. In an interesting twist, it will likely be much warmer at those work parties (at least at Cooks Meadow), than it will be down at river level.

In other events, every Friday morning is the Kickstand Coffee run at 7am. Jog 4 miles and earn yourself a free cup of coffee and a donut. There’s another group run at 8am tomorrow in Post Canyon (that should be chilly!). On Sunday, there’s yoga at 9am at Yoga Samadhi, rugby at 3pm at the Mosier School, and free yoga at 4pm at Pure Yoga in The Dalles. There’s also ping pong at the Hood River armory at 5:30.

Have an awesome day today!

Temira
