Friday. Look up at the sky. It’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s an… atmospheric river!

Oh, this is so, so interesting! I want to jump ahead and talk about all the exciting weather that’s going to happen on Mt. Hood over the next 72 hours, but … I have to start somewhere. So, I’ll start with today. It’s raining top-to-bottom at Mt. Hood Meadows today – it’s so nice that…

Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast, continued…

Expect the snow level to fluctuate between 8000′ and 10,000′ for the next 24 hours. Showers will fall on the slopes of Mt. Hood this morning, for .2-.3” of rain. After that, there will be clouds, the potential for breaks in the clouds, and the possibility of some mist through tomorrow morning. Wind today will be W 45 early, W 35 midday, and W 30 overnight.

Tomorrow looks cloudy, partly cloudy or maybe a little misty, depending on the storm track. Heavier precipitation will start around 10pm or midnight, likely in the form of rain, followed by mixed precip in the wee hours. The snow level tomorrow will be 10,000′ early, falling to 6500′ by the afternoon and staying there through about 1am. There won’t be much, if any, rainfall before 10pm, but we’ll see .5”-.8” water value (WV) between 10pm and 4am. The last couple tenths of that will likely fall as snow, for 1-2” of new by 4am. Wind on Saturday will be SW 30 early, rising to SW 50 at night.

Sunday looks very interesting. The snow level will fall from 6500′ around 1am Sunday to 3000′ by 4am and 1000-1500′ (for reals!) by 7am. Very strong orographic effects will bring .6” WV, for 6-8” of new snow, between 4am and 4pm. Another .3” will fall between 4pm Sunday and 4am Monday, for 3-4” of additional snow. Wind on Sunday will be SW 40 early, swinging to an utterly wicked NW 50 by about 7am, and slowly fading to W 30 by the afternoon, becoming more NW’erly overnight.

Total snowfall for the storm system looks to be around 12” at 5000′. That said, a warm and wet weather system is slated for Monday afternoon into Tuesday, with snow levels at or above 6500′ and 2” of rain.

Gorge Wind Forecast

This morning starts off with clouds, showers, light wind, and .02 (pdx-dls) and .05 (dls-psc). We’ll see gusty 13-16 by late morning or early afternoon through much of the Gorge, with 23-26 possible for a couple hours mid-afternoon at Arlington. Driving for it may not serve you well, unless you happen to live right there. Tomorrow, Saturday, looks like light and variable wind all day long.

Sunday looks very, very interesting. A compact low pressure system swings across southern Oregon just after daybreak (that timing could change, of course), and high pressure holds out in the Pacific. That synoptic-scale gradient looks like enough for W 30-40 through the whole Gorge on Sunday morning, fading in the afternoon. In other words, if you want it, you’re going to need to get up early and drive pre-emptively. Bring warm gear – it’s going to be in the 40’s, and bring your smallest sail or kite. Now… let’s see if that forecast holds up as we get closer!

Random Morning Thoughts

Over the last couple of years, many people whose opinions I value have said the same thing to me: “Slow down!” Being #GorgeNormal, I couldn’t see the speed they were seeing. Like you, I just live my life in a way that seems comfortable and appropriate. “Slow down” felt like criticism and judgment to me.

After I heard that phrase at the Hakomi training last weekend, I decided I’d better slow down and look for what my valued others were seeing.

Life is short, my friends. No, really. We only have so much time. Our tendency is to try and accomplish all those things we want to accomplish before we die. While doing that, we also have to manage the tasks of daily living. That leaves us short on time. We chase after experiences and learning, on some level, to avoid future regret at not having accomplished these things.

But here’s the deal: if we strive for the end result – getting good at a sport, earning a degree, raising a child into an amazing adult, mastering a new skill – we won’t get the full enjoyment out of the process of getting “there”. It’s the process that’s important, not the end result. So, slow down. Enjoy each minute, each second. See if you can set your sights on the path, rather than the destination. We’re not getting out alive, so we might as well enjoy each part of the journey. It’s an awesome journey, isn’t it? Have an awesome day.

Gorge Weather Forecast

As you may have noticed, it’s cloudy and rainy in the Gorge this morning. That’s because we’re on the southern edge of an atmospheric river that’s aimed at Vancouver Island and the Olympic Peninsula. If you’d like to read all the gory details, Cliff Mass would like to share them with you. What does this mean for us here in the Gorge? Well…

Expect a cloudy, showery day today with drier weather after 4pm. Temps will be in the mid 50’s early and the upper 50’s this afternoon. Light wind early, moderate late, 87% chance of rainbows. Tomorrow morning looks cloudy with The Nothing likely. We’ll see dry weather or maybe just a few sprinkles until late tomorrow night, when some rain will move in. Temps will be in the upper 40’s early and the upper 50’s in the afternoon. Sadly, previous predictions included a 99% chance of rainbows for Saturday afternoon. Given the changed timing/location of precipitation, we now have a 3% chance of rainbows on Saturday.

The rain that starts Saturday night will continue through Sunday afternoon before turning to showers and spinkles with a chance of … thunder?!? Temps will be in the low 40’s early and the low 50’s in the afternoon. Nuking wind on Sunday. 99% chance of rainbows.

If you live above 1000′ or so, you can expect icy roads and a possible dusting of snow on Monday morning. For reals. Now… looking ahead to Tuesday: lots of rain.

Road and Mountain Biking

Well. It seems rather soggy out there for good mountain biking. The Gorge 400, being relatively rocky, might be a decent call, but other than that… And road biking… well, not so good either, although tomorrow looks decent: dry for much of the day with light wind. Remember, there are two trail work parties on Saturday at 9:30. They both meet at Family Man. The weather looks for those work parties looks much better today than it did yesterday: instead of a downpour, it just looks cloudy with occasional sprinkles.

Upcoming Events

This morning at 7am, 39 minutes ago, was the start of the Kickstand Coffee Run. 4.1 miles, 1 donut, 1 cup of coffee for you. Tonight is the annual Gala Fashion Show at the Hood River Inn, benefiting the Hood River Christmas Project. Coming up tomorrow, as mentioned in the biking section, there are two trail work parties, both meeting at 9:30am at Family Man. There’s a trail run that meets at the bottom of Post Canyon at 8am. On a Saturday. Sheesh. Who gets up that early on a Saturday? There’s also a free half-day meditation retreat at Yoga Samadhi tomorrow from 1pm to 5pm.

Have an awesome day today!

Temira
