Well. As is sometimes the wont of Mother Nature, all that snow I talked about late last week faded and faded as the day of reckoning approached. In the end, the base of Meadows just received a trace of new. Timberline, the same. Crystal, judging by FB photos shared by employee friends of mine, received a few inches. It’s not much, but it’s a start. It’s enough to get people talking and to get them excited. Continued after the chart.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast, continued…
Today on Mt. Hood, the snow level will be 4000′ in the morning and 4500′ in the afternoon with light snow flurries. It’s possible we’ll see .1-.2” water value (WV) before the showers really taper off, giving the resorts 1-2” of new snow. Wind today will be W 15 in the morning and NW 15 in the afternoon.

See below for details.
Tomorrow starts off with the snow level at 3500′. It’ll fall a bit during the day, landing at 3000′ in the evening. We’ll see a mix of flurries and sunshine tomorrow morning. Those flurries will end in the evening for clear sky overnight. No real accumulation tomorrow, sorry. Wind will be NW 10 in the morning and NW 25 in the afternoon.
Wednesday looks sunny in the morning with increasing clouds in the afternoon as the next weather system lines up. Snow will start falling early Thursday morning. The snow level on Wednesday will be 3000′, and the wind will be NNW 20 in the morning and NW 10-15 in the afternoon. As I said, snow will start early Thursday morning; we’ll probably get 2-3” of snow on Thursday. The next system, way too far out to be predicting, looks to be on Saturday. As of yesterday, it looked like the snow level with that one would be 6500′. Now it looks like 5000′. See: long-term forecasting is silly!

Gorge Wind Forecast
There’s no wind in the Gorge this morning, but it will pick up later today. With showers in the western Gorge, the wind will be up-and-down in the 10-13 range this afternoon. East of Mosier, you can expect gusty 15-18 this afternoon. Tomorrow sees a trough of low pressure inland and high pressure off the coast. Those two features will combine for morning westerlies at 13-16 from Viento eastward (or maybe Mosier eastward). In the afternoon, you can expect gusty 13-16 or a touch more from Stevenson to Mosier with 20-23 or a touch more east of Mosier all the way to Arlington. Wednesday starts with 5-10 and picks up to 10-13 in the afternoon, strongest from Viento to Mosier.
Random Morning Thoughts
As many of you know, I write the Mt. Hood Meadows snow report as well as this forecast. Not always, mind you, but a lot of the time. When I find myself with 4am writer’s block, I often turn to a list of today’s holidays for inspiration.
Today happens to be “practice being psychic” day. People have attempted to prove and disprove psychic powers many a time, and I have no desire to raise a sword in that battle. However, we all possess the power to know what someone is feeling, if not what they’re thinking or planning. The power of empathy is hard-wired into our brains.
So, you may not be able to practice being psychic today (bending spoons is outside the realm of possibility for most, if not all of us), but you can practice being an empathic listener. Turn your full attention on your conversation partner. Make eye contact (if they are ok with eye contact – some people aren’t). Watch their body language. Nod at appropriate times. Rephrase and reflect back what they are telling you, to check that you’re really understanding. Stay present – don’t think ahead in the conversation, don’t think about where you’re going next, just sit there and really feel what’s going on. And one last thing: don’t talk about yourself – this is all about them.
If you do these things, your conversation partner might just think you’re psychic. At the very least, they’ll think you’re awesome and a great friend. Have an awesome day!

Gorge Weather Forecast
It’s mostly cloudy and somewhat sprinkly with patches of blue sky this morning. You know what that means. Yep. Rainbows. Expect temps in the upper 40’s this morning and the mid 50’s this afternoon. Light wind early, moderate wind late, 98% chance of rainbows. Tomorrow looks partly cloudy with a lesser chance of showers. Temps will be in the low 40’s early and the low 50’s in the afternoon. Moderate wind, 11% chance of rainbows. Wednesday looks dry during the day. With light wind and a low near 40 on Wednesday morning, it’s likely the day with start off with Nothing. Expect sun midday, high clouds late, and a high temp in the low 50’s. No rainbows Wednesday. Rainbows will probably return with the rain on Thursday.

Road and Mountain Biking
I’m still guessing that Post is a muddy mess. I betcha Syncline is good, and judging by the rainfall numbers up near Mt. Hood (quite minimal over the last 12 hours), the trails are likely in good shape up there. Just don’t go above 4000′, or you be riding among the snowflakes! In road biking news, Wednesday looks decent – relatively dry with minimal wind.
