Mt. Hood had a very impressive showing yesterday into today with over 6” of rain during the 24 hour period. That includes one hour when .75” of rain fell. Wow. That’s a lot of rain, but likely not as much as fell during my drive home from Portland last Wednesday. Anyway, back to the Mt. Hood snow forecast, gradually acquiring more detail as I ease into winter… Continued after the chart.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast, continued…
The snow level during the day today will be at 11,000′ early, falling to a not-helpful 10,000′ in the afternoon. Approximately 3” of rain will fall (and models seem to err on the low side…) between now and Sunday morning. Most of that will fall between 3pm and 8pm. Wind today will be WSW 65mph… I went to check current wind, and both the Magic Mile and top of Cascade sensors are down right now, so I have no windspeeds to report at upper elevations.

See below for details.
The snow level will fall to 6000′ by Sunday morning, falling further to 4500′ by Sunday afternoon. Sadly, the precip amounts for Sunday have backed way off, from well over 1” to just under 1”. We’ll see .5-.6” water value (WV) fall during the day, for 2-4” of wet, heavy snow. We’ll see another .4” overnight, when the snow level is lower, perhaps as low as 4000′, for another 4” of new snow. (I just ran screaming out of my house to stare at the first rainbow of the day – I’m back now)
The snow level will be around 4000′ on Monday with trace accumulations and around 3000′ on Tuesday with no accumulation, so watch out for icy roads if you’re going over the passes. And remember, if you’re a studded tire person, you can put those on tomorrow.

Gorge Wind Forecast
Predicting the wind with this kind of setup is like predicting which keys my cat will step on as she walks across the keyboard: not so effective. Not much chance of success. But I can give you a broad-brush picture of what to expect today. There will not be wind in the eastern Gorge this morning. You can expect very gusty, up-and-down westerlies anywhere from 20-30 from Steven’s Locks to Doug’s this morning. In the afternoon, you’ll see torrential downpour in the western Gorge with gusty, up-and-down 26-30 from Maryhill eastward.
Tomorrow brings periods of 26-30 through pretty much the whole Gorge in the morning, interspersed with rain and rainbows. The wind will back off by about 5-10mph in the afternoon, continuing to be gusty and up-and-down..
Expect steadier westerlies at 10-13 through the whole Gorge on Monday morning with 13-16 Monday afternoon, strongest from HR to Maryhill. Tuesday looks like a zero wind day, which also means Tuesday will likely be shrouded in a Nothing cloud.
No wind at Jones and Sauvie’s for the next three days. NOAA’s coast forecast is here, interesting today for strong southerly winds and large, chaotic waves.
Random Morning Thoughts
I’m having trouble finishing the forecast this morning because the current location of rainbows (CLR) is directly outside my window. I keep running outside into my muddy yard to see if the rainbow is full, if it is brighter than the last time I ran out, and if there might now be more than one rainbow.
As you might have guessed, I have a bit of a rainbow obsession. I think they’re amazing. What else in nature is as magical as as rainbow? Sure, there are brightly colored flowers and bugs and fish and animals. Those creatures usually only have a few colors. A rainbow, on the other hand, has lots of colors (excuse me for a moment – I need to run outside).
Rainbows hang in the air, in defiance of gravity. Rainbows are as awesome as birds. Rainbows are better than Prozac and Valium. Rainbows fade and brighten and disappear as the wind moves the clouds and the rain. Rainbows are one of the few things you can’t overdose on: the more rainbows the better! Today looks like a great day for rainbows. Enjoy!

Gorge Weather Forecast
Yesterday turned out to be a 100% chance of rainbows day, and today’s looking similar. I see rain. I see blue sky. I see lots of potential here. Temps will be in the low to mid 60’s all day today with showers in the morning and a downpour after 2pm. Gusty west wind. 100% chance of rainbows. (there’s one right now)
Tomorrow looks partly cloudy and showery. Temps will be in the upper 40’s early and the mid 50’s in the afternoon. Gusty, strong west wind for periods of time. 94% chance of rainbows. Monday looks partly cloudy with temps in the mid 40’s early and the mid 50’s in the afternoon. Moderate west wind. 1% chance of rainbows. Expect a full Nothing on Tuesday morning.

Road and Mountain Biking
I have a sneaking suspicion that Post Canyon is wet enough that you’ll do trail damage by riding today: we received .7” of rain yesterday and another .15” so far today. If you want to get out and ride bikes somewhere today, you’ll find the driest (not dry, mind you, but less wet) weather before 2pm. Road biking sounds wet and dangerous with all those slippery leaves on the ground. Be careful out there! Remember, there’s a trail work party on Cooks Meadow tomorrow. Meet at Little John at 9am.

Upcoming Events
There’s a trail work party at Teacup today at 11am. Bring loppers, rakes, shovels, etc. There’s the Parkdale Pumpkin Fun Run today in Parkdale. I believe it’s 9am. It’s Halloween tonight, and for a fun time, head to downtown Hood River to see all the little and big kids trick-or-treating in the pouring rain. Yay. Set your clocks back tonight for an extra hour of sleep and a lighter morning.
Coming up Sunday, there’s a trail work party at Cooks Meadow – meet at 9am at Little John Snopark for that one. The snow level on Sunday will be around 5500′, so make sure you are dressed for cold, wet weather. Bring a thermos of hot something-to-drink. If you would like to stay warm and dry on Sunday, there are three free yoga classes: 9am at Yoga Samadhi, 4pm at Pure Yoga, and 6pm at Root Down Yoga.
Have an awesome day today!
