It’s that time of year. The time of year when the wind forecast steps down below the snow forecast. If you need wind, skim down to find it. If you’re curious about snow, start here. We’re still in abbreviated mode on the Mt. Hood snow forecast, but just you wait. The full forecast is right around the corner. For today on Mt. Hood, you can expect torrential rain, 4-5” of the stuff by this evening. The snow level will be around 10,000’. Continued after the chart.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast, continued…
There will be a break in the rain tonight, followed by more rain tomorrow, becoming heavy in the afternoon. Another 4-5” of rain will fall on Mt. Hood tomorrow afternoon with the snow level around 10,000′

See below for details.
The snow level will drop to 5500′ by Sunday morning with WSW wind at 50mph through Sunday evening. In the period from 4am Sunday to 4pm Sunday, Mt. Hood will receive approximately 1.4” of water value, for 8-12” of wet, heavy, dense, base-building snow. Another .8” WV will fall between 4pm Sunday and 4am Monday, for another 5-7” of Cascade Concrete.
Monday may see a few leftover flurries with the snow level at 3500′ to 4000′. In other words, expect snowy and icy driving conditions on the passes on Monday morning. That’s good timing, as you can put your studded tires on (should you be a user of such things) November 1st.

Gorge Wind Forecast
There is a bit of cross-Cascade gradient out there this morning, and there will be some opportunity to get on the water today. That said, it’s not the kind of day – not the kind of 72 hours, really – that can be accurately predicted. We’re right under the tracks for the Pineapple Express, and we’ll be seeing system after system move through. In addition, it’s going to be POURING in the western Gorge, so if you want to chase the wind, you’ll have to drive.
So… disclaimers aside, here’s what I can tell you might happen over the next three days. It’s really not a great setup to try and predict…. We’ll see a warm front move through the area today (or at least park over the Gorge). That will set us up for possible periods of gusty, squally mid 20’s in the western Gorge with a mid afternoon burst of gusty, you’d-better-drive-preemptively, 25-29 at Arlington and other far east beaches.
A cold front moves through tomorrow, setting us up for a similar situation to today. If the models have the timing right (and often they don’t with this kind of setup), you’ll find gusty, up-and-down 25-29 east of The Dalles early tomorrow afternoon. Sunday also looks like “one of those days” where you might find a period of 24-28 east of Mosier mid-morning.
All those periods of wind will fade after a couple of hours and may be punctuated by rain, clouds and/or rainbows. Southerly winds at Sauvie’s, nothing worth talking about at Jones, and the coast forecast is here.
Random Morning Thoughts
As many of you know, I’m in the master’s in counseling program at PSU. Counseling is a pretty big field, and I’m curious about all aspects of it. So, having a slow-paced life with a fair bit of free time, I’m doing some volunteering to narrow down my options.
Having free time to volunteer is pretty awesome. Maybe you have free time? Volunteering allows you to explore your interests in a way that benefits you without tying you down, and volunteering provides free extra help for your organization. However, please, be committed on some level – don’t bail on the organization and people you’re supposed to be helping! When you volunteer, you can learn new skills and meet new people who have similar interests. You can develop a deeper sense of purpose and connection.
Maybe you have something you’re interested in exploring? Think about a place where you could offer your time for free in exchange for learning more about that interest. Volunteering is awesome for adults and even more awesome for kids, especially for kids whose parents have extra cash. Maybe a job isn’t an option for your kid? Perhaps they could volunteer and you could pay them for the time they spend volunteering. Volunteering is more educational than yardwork, it looks great on a resume, and it will broaden your kid’s horizons. And yours.
Volunteer. It’s awesome. Have an awesome day.

Gorge Weather Forecast
Today is, and shall remain, rainy. Although it’s just rainy right now, it will most likely progress to downpoury or torrential rainy or Pineapple Expressing later in the day. Expect temps in the mid 50’s early and the low 60’s in the afternoon. Up-and-down wind. 14% chance of rainbows.
Tomorrow sees a break in the rain in the morning (or maybe just showers) under mostly cloudy sky. Heavy rain starts up again around 1pm and continues through about 8pm. Temps will be in the mid 50’s early and the mid 60’s in the afternoon. Gusty westerlies. 32% chance of rainbows.
Sunday looks mostly cloudy with sunbreaks interspersed with longer periods of rain. Temps will be in the upper 40’s early and the mid 50’s in the afternoon. Gusty westerlies. 62% chance of rainbows.

Road and Mountain Biking
I went trail running starting at Family Man yesterday, and I was pretty stunned – it was tacky, not wet. But now it’s wet, and it’s going to get wetter. And we’re going to lose Gunsight, Boulder Lakes, 450 and High Prairie on Sunday due to snowfall. So there you go. Mountain biking season is on hold. However, there’s a trail work party on Cooks Meadow at 9am (see below) on Sunday, and there’s an HRATS work party in Post Canyon on the 14th.

Upcoming Events
This morning is the Kickstand Coffee Run. Or it WAS the Kickstand Coffee Run. I didn’t get up until it was 30 minutes past the start time. There’s a trail work party at Teacup tomorrow at 11am (bring loppers and whatever other trail tools you have). There’s the Parkdale Pumpkin Fun Run tomorrow morning in, duh, Parkdale. It is, of course, Halloween tomorrow night, and the heaviest of the rain looks to fall between 4pm and 7pm. YOU WILL SET YOUR CLOCKS BACK TOMORROW NIGHT!
Coming up Sunday, there’s a trail work party at Cooks Meadow – meet at 9am at Little John Snopark for that one. The snow level on Sunday will be around 5500′, so make sure you are dressed for cold, wet weather. Bring a thermos of hot something-to-drink. If you would like to stay warm and dry on Sunday, there are three free yoga classes: 9am at Yoga Samadhi, 4pm at Pure Yoga, and 6pm at Root Down Yoga.
Have an awesome day today!
