Wednesday. Does your Halloween costume contain an umbrella?

We’re about to take a tumble into a very progressive and active weather setup, and that’s not good news for Gorge wind. We do have some weak easterlies in this morning’s rain: 17-20 at both Steven’s Locks and Rooster’s Rock. The east wind will fade by midday, switching to west 5-10 this afternoon. If you…

Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Gorge Wind Forecast, continued…

Tomorrow starts off with post frontal westerlies at 7-11. As another front approaches in the afternoon, the wind will pick up to gusty 13-16 from Steven’s Locks to Mosier and pick up to gusty 22-25 east of Mosier, all the way to Arlington.

Friday, given how hard it’s likely to rain, is probably a writeoff. That said, you may find periods of gusty mid-20’s at Arlington and beaches further east. It’ll just be pouring rain in the western Gorge, but hey, maybe we’ll see some rainbows…

The coast forecast is taking a break this week. We’re going to see system after system swing through, making for unreliable wind. You can read the NWS forecast if you’d like.

Jones n’ Sauvie’s beta test forecast: no wind at either of those beaches for the next three days.

Random Morning Thoughts

I’ve been watching all the dire climate change news and wondering how we ended up in such a place. We’ve changed an entire planet in significant ways, and yet, so many of us still deny that humans could have an impact.

We, as a species, were much more connected to our planet in the past. We celebrated festivals based on significant days in the solar cycle. We celebrated harvests. We knew the stars and the moon and sun like we knew our own families. Heck, we knew our families.

But as we’ve moved away from agriculture and into a grocery-based economy, we’ve become disconnected from our impact on the planet. When we grew our own food, our connection to Earth was tangible: we planted, things grew. We overplanted, we ruined the soil and had to move on. We’re currently doing the equivalent of overplanting the planet in many domains. Yet, we live our lives disconnected from this process – the mining, the drilling, the planting all happens out of sight.

And so we believe we have no impact. We deny our connection to Earth’s processes. I wasn’t sure where I was going with this, but I am now: it is time for each and every one of us to reconnect with the planet and understand our link to it. Get your hands back in touch with Earth: start a garden, go to a trail work party, start panning for gold, take up fly fishing, hunt for mushrooms, visit a quarry, mine, or human-caused forest fire location. Reconnect with your planet. It’s the only one you have.

Gorge Weather Forecast

It’s definitely cloudy out there, and judging by the sound of the cars on the road, it’s not yet wet. However, I looked at the radar image, and “wet” is in our future today. Expect the rain to arrive shortly and continue for the morning, tapering off in the afternoon. Temps will be in the upper 40’s early and the low 60’s later. Light wind, 94% chance of rainbows, especially in the afternoon.

Tomorrow will start off with a few showers or maybe a nothing cloud under partly cloudy sky. Temps will be near 50 early and in the mid 60’s in the afternoon. Moderate wind. 14% chance of morning rainbows. Expect more rain by midday Friday, continuing to rain – with periods of very heavy rain – through late Halloween night. The trick-or-treat hours, especially, look very wet. You may want to consider a costume that incorporates an umbrella.

In snow level news, expect 8000′ this morning and 6000′ this afternoon. I’d tell you how many inches we’ll get, but there’s no point; it’s all going to wash away this weekend. Expect the snow level at 6000′ Thursday morning and 9000′ Thursday afternoon. As the downpour moves in on Friday, the snow level will rise to 10,000. It’ll fall to a slightly more reasonable 7500′ on Saturday. In a nice turn of events, it looks like the post-pineapple system on Sunday/Monday could bring 8-12” of new snow at 5000′. But that’s a LONG ways out, so don’t get your panties in a bunch.

Road and Mountain Biking

Post was AMAZEBALLS yesterday, but judging by the radar image, it’s about to get too muddy/slick to ride. I received a report that Hospital Hill was still quite dry yesterday. Same goes for the 44 Road trails and for Whoopdee. Hopefully today’s downpour will change that, and if not, the weekend will certainly end the dry trail situation (and perhaps give a kick to the chanterelle situation, which hasn’t been all that great this year). In road biking news, tomorrow is your best chance for dry weather until next week. I suggest you jump on it!
