Monday. Looks like Autumn is here to stay.

Today is starting off rainy and cloudy and not windy as an upper level low makes its way onshore. As the low moves across the central Washington Cascade midday today, we’ll see the wind pick up through the Gorge. You should be able to find, if you’re in the right place at the right time,…

Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Gorge Wind Forecast, continued…

Tomorrow sees high pressure build inland. Combine that with yet another offshore low for east wind. Expect 30-35 at Rooster Rock all day tomorrow with 26-30 at Steven’s Locks.

Models are predicting another round of east wind on Wednesday. However, it’s going to be raining pretty much all day, which makes for wind that doesn’t match the models and faces that sting from raindrops. Should you want to get on the water, you’ll find unreliable 25-30 at Rooster and a bit less at Steven’s Locks.

Thursday, which is a long ways out and therefore suffers from long-range-itis, looks light-and-variable early with west wind at 26-30 east of Hood River in the afternoon. It’s actually a pretty decent setup, assuming nothing changes: low pressure system moving inland with strong high pressure building off the coast. Another factor in Thursday’s favor is that I have a very full calendar that day – that always increases the chances of good wind. Add “windsurfing” or “kiting” to your Thursday calendar, just in case.

The coast forecast is taking a break this week. We’re going to see system after system swing through, making for unreliable wind. You can read the NWS forecast if you’d like.

Jones n’ Sauvie’s beta test forecast: no wind at either of those beaches for the next three days.

Nothing to say here today.

Random Morning Thoughts

Helplessness is a fascinating topic to me. It’s the driver of so much other negative emotion: when we feel helpless in the face of something, we tend to struggle. We fall into anger. Frustration. Fear. Sometimes we think we are helpless when we really aren’t – we’re just having trouble seeing a way to help ourselves.

The trick is to make accurate evaluations of when we are truly helpless and when we’re not. If we can’t change what’s going on, the options include things such as getting out of the situation or changing our outlook on the situation. If there are options to change the situation, and we don’t take action, we are clinging to our helplessness for some reason.

Although it may feel scary to take action when we feel helpless, movement is freeing. Movement creates additional viewpoints. Movement creates a sense of power. Fighting back in situations where you feel helpless is tied to better mental health. So, move. Even if you don’t want to. Create change in your world, even tiny change, rather than allowing yourself to be overrun by fear. Be awesome, and have an awesome day.

Gorge Weather Forecast

It’s rainy out there, and I’m so disappointed: I resealed my windshield a few weeks ago, and it’s STILL leaking. I was so excited to not have water dripping inside my car. Anyway, you’re more interested in the weather than my leaky car, I’m sure… Expect rain this morning with decreasing showers this afternoon. Temps will be in the upper 40’s early and in the upper 50’s this afternoon. Moderate west wind later. 97% chance of rainbows.

Given the saturated ground, tomorrow will likely start off with Nothing, becoming mostly sunny in the afternoon. Temps will be near 40 early and in the low 60’s later. East wind. No rainbows. Wednesday looks rainy early with showers in the afternoon. Temps will be in the mid 40’s early and the upper 50’s in the afternoon. East wind. 92% chance of rainbows. Thursday, Saturday and Sunday all look rainy. Your best bets for dry weather are Tuesday and Friday.

In snow level news (it’s not quite time for a full-blow snow forecast)… the snow level is hovering around 6000′ this morning and will rise to 6500′-7000′ this afternoon. It will rise to 10,000 tomorrow. Thursday’s system will start out with the snow level around 8000′, and then will fall to 6500′ in the afternoon. Thursday’s system looks like 6500′.

Looking ahead to Sunday, because it’s more interesting, we’ll see the snow level around 5000′, which will make for an interesting work party at Cooks Meadow. I recommend checking the Meadows webcams for a weather update before you make the drive to do trail work!

Road and Mountain Biking

It would appear that we’ve had almost a third of an inch of rain in the last 24 hours, and that’s going to be enough to make it slippery in Post, and perhaps muddy up high. Whoopdee, Syncline, and 44 Road trails may ride better today. Tomorrow, however… I bet it’s going to be AMAZING in Post tomorrow afternoon! In road biking news, tomorrow afternoon should end up sunny but plagued by easterly wind. Stay low to avoid the strongest easterlies. Wednesday and Thursday both look too wet for road riding… the gym is your gym?

Upcoming Events

Happy Monday, start to the week! There’s free Tai Chi today at the Mt. Hood Town Hall at 1pm. Then there are three free classes at 6:30: Yoga at Yoga Samadhi, Zumba at the Mt. Hood Community Center, and Yoga at the Mt. Hood Town Hall. There’s also Aikido (not free) at Trinity Natural Medicine’s studio in Hood River at 6pm.

The only thing I have on my calendar for next weekend (besides Halloween, of course), is a work party on the Cooks Meadow trail on Sunday. See weather forecast above.

Have an awesome day today!

Temira
