There’s both a bit of gradient and a bit of wind on the river this morning, and that shall continue for the rest of the day as an upper level low moves into northern California. Westerlies at 7am were in teens everywhere but Stevenson with a .07 (pdx-dls) and a .03 (dls-psc). The wind will stick around in the up-and-down, gusty 15-18 range pretty much everywhere except Stevenson today. Stevenson, under the clouds and in the rain zone, will likely see less wind. Continued after the chart.

Gorge Wind Forecast, continued…
A weak weather system will move through the region in the afternoon tomorrow, setting us up for another round of wind. Expect 10-13 everywhere except Stevenson tomorrow morning. The wind will pick up from Viento eastward mid-afternoon, hitting 19-22 near Hood River and gusty 23-26 from Mosier east to Arlington.
Tuesday starts off with leftover westerlies at 11-14 from Hood River eastward. As of right now, models say the wind will back off to light and variable in the afternoon.

Random Morning Thoughts
I was driving back from Mosier a couple of days ago. Little fluffy clouds filled the sky, sitting against a pale blue background. Clouds are white and gray and sometimes pink and purple and gold. Suddenly it struck me that I’d be viewing clouds as two-dimensional my whole life: paintings against a blue background. Yes, I know this sounds ridiculous. But now I look at the sky and try and see them as three-dimensional objects.
It’s a brain hack. Practicing brain hacks, much like switching between two languages, can give your mind more flexibility. Try it: if you see clouds in three dimensions, try and see them as two-dimensional paintings. And if you see paintings, try and see them as three-dimensional objects.
Clouds are a specific example. You can generalize the mind hack practice to other areas of your life, even to people. When you run into people about whom you feel neutral or negative, try approaching them as if you’ve never met them before. In other words, drop the preconceived notions and approach these potentially unpleasant situations as you approach the clouds: try a different viewpoint. Speaking of viewpoints, approach your viewpoints in a different way too: see if you can understand the opposite viewpoint. Play Devil’s Advocate with yourself.
This ability to see many viewpoints is the hallmark of formal operational thinking, also known as “how adults think”. It doesn’t come naturally, even to adults, but it can be practiced. So, alter your view of clouds, approach familiar people with curiosity and openness, and try on different viewpoints for size. Your mind will thank you. Have an awesome day.

Gorge Weather Forecast
In looking at the radar image this morning, I’m seeing the rain sitting just west of us. That’s nice for the trails and the chanterelle mychorrhizae living west of Hood River, but we need rain too. Expect a slight chance of showers all day today, with the heaviest rain falling on the Cross Crusade race in Cascade Locks. Temps today will be in the upper 50’s early and the upper 60’s this afternoon. Light wind. 33.1% chance of rainbows.
We’ll see a few sprinkles tomorrow morning under partly cloudy sky with a break midday and increasing chance of showers late in the afternoon as a weather system moves in. Temps will be in the low 50’s early and the mid 60’s in the afternoon. Light wind early, moderate to strong wind late, 41.7% chance of rainbows. Tuesday may start off with a Nothing cloud but will likely end up sunny. Temps will be in the upper 40’s early and the upper 60’s in the afternoon. Light wind. No rainbows.

Road and Mountain Biking
I went for a ride in Post yesterday, and the dirt was still fast and fun. As I was leaving, it started rain, and it kept raining for a couple of hours. That leads me to believe that the dirt will be tacky at some point today. Sadly, I don’t think I can squeeze in a ride, so you’ll have to ride for both of us. In road biking news, today will be okay – moderate wind and a chance of showers, but Tuesday looks much better as a ridge of high pressure builds, bringing sunshine and light wind.
