Friday. Big wind and big blue sky. Carpe diem!

I said yesterday (I think) that I doubted we’d see what the models were predicting for Dawn Patrol, but I was wrong. There’s a huge gradient out there this morning .18 (pdx-dls) and .04 (dls-psc), and when I last looked, it was blowing 27 at Swell, 21 at Doug’s, 22 at Maryhill, and a bit…

Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

Today’s weather dynamics include high pressure offshore this morning combined with an approaching trough of low pressure this afternoon. As always, dynamics can affect the reliability of the wind; get it early if you can. Continued after the chart.

Gorge Wind Forecast, continued…

That said, you can expect 26-30 this morning near Swell with 23-26 from Mosier to Rufus. Models suggest we’ll see some periods of 30+ today; I suspect that’ll happen this morning at Swell and Mosier, this afternoon at Doug’s and the Maryhill stretch and late this afternoon at Arlington. That said, when this trough approaches, we’ll see the wind drop at Swell (for sure) Mosier (probably) Doug’s (hmmm… hard to say) and pick up at Stevenson and Arlington. All-in-all, it’s a pretty good setup today, and if you can get out there, you should!

Random Morning Thoughts

I’m sitting here this morning listening to Hakomi webinars while I write the forecast. That makes it difficult to devote 100% of my attention to my work. And that’s a little ironic; Therapy in general, and Hakomi in particular, requires the helper to be completely and totally present. Therapists don’t just pay attention to words; they watch gestures, expressions, spots of tension in the body, breathing, and all sorts of other non-verbal behaviors. There’s a lot of information hidden outside our words, you know!

This can be scary; how often have you been observed on such a microscopic level? Not often, eh? Scary is one option. Another is validating. Having someone be that curious about you can be freeing; you can feel totally loved and supported.

You can take this idea into your conversations with your friends. Listen, but also notice their non-verbal behavior. Be fully attuned to them as a human being. In other words, listen to your friends and attend to them with your entire range of senses. Leave judgment outside this process; just be curious. Really, really curious in a loving way. After all, the person you’re hearing is your friend – you are curious about them. You want to understand them and be there for them! They’re awesome, right, and so are you. Have an awesome day!

It’s mostly clear out there this morning, but we’ll probably see increasing clouds this afternoon. Temps will be in the upper 50’s early and the low 70’s this afternoon. Nuking wind. No rainbows. Tomorrow looks sunny with temps in the upper 40’s early and the low 70’s in the afternoon. Light west wind early, calm wind by midday. No rainbows. Road and Mountain Biking

No change on the trails. In road biking news, it’ll be way too windy today! Tomorrow afternoon looks FANTASTIC – sunshine and light wind. Sunday will bring stronger easterlies – you’ll notice them if you road ride, especially at higher elevations.

McCurdy Farms, Hood River

Need pears? Need apples? Need a suggestion for a good bike ride around here? The McCurdy Farms fruit stand halfway up Peggy’s Roost Hill (2080 Tucker Road, just below Portland Drive) has the best prices on the best fruit and the best ride suggestions too. Fruit prices are $.50-$.75/lb for beautiful pears and apples. Cycling advice is free. They have lots of my favorite pears, Comice. Maybe they have your favorites too. Stop by and say hi to Natalie and Craig when you ride by on your Valley Loop bike ride. Come back later for lots of fruit and suggestions on other rides. McCurdy Farms – the secret fruit stand not on the Fruit Loop map. Visit today.

Upcoming Events

Today is Friday, and I woke up late. That means I (and you) have missed the Kickstand Coffee Run. Every Friday, 7am, 4.1 miles, free coffee, free donut. Today is First Friday, and I’m not sure what’s going on, but it’s worth a wander downtown late this afternoon or early this evening.

Coming up tomorrow, there’s a trail run at 8am in Post Canyon. There’s a work party on the 170 trail – meet at Binn’s Hill Staging Area at 9am. Take a Kid Mountain Biking Day is tomorrow from 4-6pm at the EasyCLIMB trail in Cascade Locks, and there’s a cyclocross race at Cooper Spur on Sunday. Also Sunday: free yoga extravaganza – 9am at Yoga Samadhi, 4pm at Pure Yoga in The Dalles, 6pm at Root Down Yoga in Hood River.

Have an awesome day today!
