There’s quite a solid east gradient out there this morning – .13 from Portland to The Dalles – and that’s almost enough to get me to head to Portland early with my windsurfing gear for a pre-school session on the water. Showing up smelling like wetsuit and Columbia on the first day of class is OK, right? Anyway, expect east wind at 25-29 at Rooster through early afternoon with Stevenson joining with 23-26 through early afternoon. As usual, we’ll see an afternoon fade in the wind, a slow decline to the 15-18 range late in the day. Continued after the chart.

Gorge Wind Forecast, continued…
Tomorrow starts off with easterlies at 21-24 at Rooster and 13-16 at Stevenson, holding through midday and fading in the afternoon. You can expect light wind on Wednesday morning with west wind at 10-13 in the afternoon as an upper level low moves onshore.
As of today, it’s looking like we’ll see stronger westerlies on Thursday afternoon, followed by lighter wind on Friday. Models are all over the place for the weekend, with the E saying one thing and the G saying something totally different. So, no weekend guesses for you yet.

Random Morning Thoughts
I’m sitting here this morning with the phrase, “Today is the first day of the rest of your life” whirling around and around in my head. As those words repeat, I’m writing this forecast and looking at a 29mph reading at Rooster Rock. Rooster’s on my way to school, I’m thinking; I could stop for a windsurfing session on the way to class!
When we’re incorporating change into our lives, we often think that everything will change along with the big change that’s captured our attention. My expectation of grad school includes a complete lack of windsurfing, trail running, mountain biking, road biking, and powder skiing for the next three years. That, of course, is ridiculous, and even more ridiculous now that I realize that Rooster Rock is on my way to school and therefore even more convenient than me driving to the Hatchery!
We can find continuity even in change. There might be less time for friends, for our favorite activities. There might be less happiness or peace for a while, maybe for a long while. But these things are a matter of degree, not of absolutes; even in our darkest days, even when we move away, there are kind words, phone chats, text messages, and happy photos to bring a little warmth and joy into our worlds.
It’s hard to remember to think in terms of gradations rather than either/or, black/white, yes/no, all/nothing. But if we can, we’ll thrive. Today is the first day of the rest of your life too. Make it awesome. See you on the water!
Gorge Weather Forecast
It’s a crisp, clear morning here in the Gorge in the aftermath of last night’s amazing Super Blood Moon. Radiational cooling has left us with temps in the upper 30’s in Hood River this morning. Brrr! Models seem to think we’ll get into the mid to upper 70’s this afternoon. That may be a touch optimistic, but still, it’s a beautiful day. Moderate east wind. Tomorrow looks nearly identical: temps in the upper 30’s early and the upper 70’s in the afternoon with light east wind. Expect a few more clouds on Wednesday with temps in the mid 40’s early and the low 70’s in the afternoon. Light wind. No rainbows for the three-day period.

Road and Mountain Biking
There’s still nothing new to report in trail news: lots of dry dirt just waiting for the rain. Hospital and Whoopdee are STILL closed due to fire danger. Post Canyon is open to moto riding, but none of the other county lands are. In road biking news, you can expect the interference of east wind today at all elevations. Wednesday looks like epic road biking.
