Gorge Wind Forecast (and Sauvie’s, Jones, the Coast…)
As you may have guessed by the color of the sky and the air quality this morning, there’s no wind in the Gorge. Well, that’s not quite correct: there was an east .07 (pdx-dls) gradient this morning, and that was driving some easterlies in the 13-16 range at Steven’s Locks and 5-10 range at Rooster’s Rocks. Expect 13-16 at both beaches today with a late morning period of 20-23 possible.
Tomorrow starts off with light easterlies that probably won’t even make it to the 10-13 range. Whatever wind we have at dawn will be gone midday as gradients go slack. Sometime after noon, we’ll see the wind switch to westerly, picking up to 10-13 from Stevenson to Hood River by 2pm and possibly picking up to 13-16 a bit later. That’s a big maybe on the stronger wind.

It’s the bi-annual summer pledge drive!
See above for details.
Monday starts off with 13-16 near Hood River and picks up to 25-29 in the afternoon from Stevenson to Doug’s as a trough of low pressure approaches the coast.
Speaking of the coast (north/central/south). Today: 20-25/20-25/LTV, NW swell 5′ @ 8 seconds. Tomorrow: 15-20/10-15/LTV, NW 5 @ 9. Monday: 5-10/10-15/20-25, NW 6 @ 12.
Jones n’ Sauvie’s beta test forecast. Jones today, E 5-10. Jones tomorrow, W 23-26. Jones Monday, 21-24. Sauvie’s today, light. Sauvie’s tomorrow, 5-8. Sauvie’s Monday, 7-10.
Mt. Hood Snow Forecast
Nothing to say here today.
Random Morning Thoughts
I woke up this morning (late, as you may have guessed) and looked out my window to a smokey haze. “Yuck,” I thought, as I sunk into a gloomy state of mind usually associated with the winter’s Nothing cloud. I just looked up from the blue glare of my laptop screen, and the haze has changed; instead of a gloomy gray, it’s golden. It’s peach-colored. It’s downright beautiful. The amber light is spectacular.
Don’t get me wrong: all this smoke sucks. All these wildfires suck. It sucks that we lost three firefighters a couple days ago. It sucks that climate change is going to make extreme fire seasons more common. It sucks that we’re really not doing anything to stop the heating of the planet.
But in this moment, the light outside my window is beautiful. And that’s all we can do sometimes: pick one little beautiful thing in the midst of a lot of bad things. Joy can coexist along with sadness. Wonder can exist alongside frustration. Awe can sit with fury. Our minds are capable of experiencing many things at once. Take advantage of that fact (if you haven’t seen the movie Inside Out, I recommend it) and live a fuller, more awesome life.
Gorge Weather Forecast
It’s mostly clear above us this morning, but you wouldn’t know it with all the smoke from the Cougar Creek Fire. When I woke up, I thought the mid-winter Nothing had made an appearance. But no, it’s just the Smokething, not the Nothing. Expect the Smokething to stick around all day, with temps in the upper 40’s (brrr!) early and the mid 80’s this afternoon. Very light east wind. No rainbows. Tomorrow starts off Smokething with temps in the mid 50’s. Expect high temps in the upper 80’s with the Smokething clearing out late in the afternoon as the wind switches from calm to light west. No rainbows tomorrow either. Monday looks sunny with temps in the upper 50’s early and the mid 80’s in the afternoon. Moderate wind. No rainbows.
White Sprinter Van of the Day
Road and Mountain Biking
As expected, the wind is quite light this morning, the temps are chilly, and the air is smoky. Two of these make for great bike riding, and one does not, meaning the pluses outweigh the minuses and you should be clad in spandex right now. Expect the same for much of the day tomorrow until returning west wind blows the smoke away.
