Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Gorge Wind Forecast (and Sauvie’s, Jones, the Coast…)

There’s more wind out there this morning than there has been for a couple of days, and that’s great unless you’re a forecaster sitting at her computer looking at it. Our setup is just-ok today, with an offshore low pressure system and a chance of instability this afternoon. However, the 7am gradients (cat let me sleep in) were .10 (pdx-dls), .02 (dls—psc) and .48 (eph-dls), enough to foreshadow a windy day.

Expect 21-24 this morning from Viento to Mosier. That’ll hold, or pick up just a bit, through midday, with Stevenson joining in late morning. It’s looking like the wind will pick up to 25-29 late in the day, possibly including the Stevenson to Mosier stretch, but most likely blowing strongest from Lyle to Rufus. Arlington will join in with 25-29 late in the afternoon or early in the evening. Do keep an eye on the radar image, as desert thunderstorms could shut down the eastern Gorge wind.

It’s the bi-annual summer pledge drive!
See above for details.

Tomorrow starts off with 21-24 from Swell all the way to Arlington. As the offshore low pressure system starts to move inland midday, we’ll see the wind jump to 26-30 or more pretty much everywhere. Your best bet for the strongest, steadiest wind will likely be the Rowena stretch of the river, but go anywhere you like for at-least-some-wind tomorrow.

Friday sees the low exit to the east while high pressure builds and stabilizes off the Oregon coast. This is a nearly-ideal setup, and should give us 26-30 from Lyle to Arlington all day long. It’s likely that the Stevenson to Mosier section of the river will be under marine clouds on Friday, so that’s why you’re driving. Or you can kite/windsurf under the clouds for gusty 13-16 and rainbows.

As of right now, Saturday looks like 15-18 and Sunday looks like 12-15, but we’ll need to wait a day or two to see if the models stick with that prediction.

Coast (north/central/south). Today: Light and variable (LTV), NW swell 3′ @ 6 seconds. Tomorrow: LTV, NW 3 @ 8. Friday: LTV, NW 3 @ 8.

Jones and Sauvie’s beta test forecast. Jones today, 14-17. Jones tomorrow, 22-25. Jones Friday, 10-13. Sauvie’s: Light and variable the next three days.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

Nothing to say here today.

Random Morning Thoughts

pyrocumulonimbus
I’m looking out my window this morning at a beautiful, sunny day with whitecaps on the river. I’m also looking at what appears to be a pyrocumulonimbus cloud from the new Cougar Creek fire to the SE of Mt. Adams. This, in other words, is a public service announcement, not a morning reflection.

As of earlier this morning, there was no information on the fire on Inciweb or NWCC. Other sources reported that the fire jumped from 100 acres to over 1000 acres yesterday. The wind over the next three days is not going to help this situation.

According to various news sources, Bird Creek Meadows and other hikes in that vicinity are closed. Yakima Nation lands are closed to recreation. The Mt. Adams ranger is encouraging people to not recreate in adjoining areas of the Gifford Pinchot.

With the Mt. Adams webcam not showing anything this morning, it’s difficult to tell what the smoke situation is in Trout Lake and Glenwood. However, it’s probably not a great idea to ride the Forest Loop or Glenwood Loop at this time. Plus, Glenwood is the staging area for the fire crews.

So, cross your fingers for our courageous wildland firefighters and pray for rain and less wind.

Gorge Weather Forecast

It’s mostly clear out there there this morning with just a bit of convective clouds over areas of the Cascades. Expect a few more convective clouds this afternoon. Temps will be in the low 70’s early and the upper 80’s later with relatively high humidity and moderate wind. 1% chance of rainbows. Tomorrow looks sunny to start with more clouds in the afternoon and a slight chance of thunder. Temps will be in the mid 60’s early and the upper 80’s in the afternoon. Strong wind. 1% chance of rainbows. Friday looks partly cloudy with a chance of showers. Temps will be in the low 60’s early and the mid 70’s (no, really!) in the afternoon. Strong wind, 28% chance of rainbows. The weekend looks sunny and warmer.

Road and Mountain Biking

There’s still no news to report here, but it looks like the weekend will be less windy than the next few days, setting us up for some nice road biking. With the Cougar Creek Fire going nuts over by Mt. Adams, you may want to avoid the Glenwood loop and the Forest Loop.
