Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

So please take a moment to click one of the buttons below. Donate $19.99 or more (how much does this forecast enhance your life?) and get the email in your inbox. Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

Random Morning Thoughts

Today is the winter solstice. Happy first day of winter. I’m hoping winter will start on the mountain soon. Although I’m having a lovely time ripping carving turns on my BC tele gear, I would like to break out my new skis and slash some pow. Just sayin’…

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast – 5000′
Saturday

Monday

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

Although temps have dropped below freezing this morning on Mt. Hood, the precipitation type has stayed clear. The theoretical snow level today (the freezing rain level?) will be 5500′ early, 3500′ mid-morning, and then will rise to 7500′ this afternoon and evening, with temps just above freezing at 5000-7500′. We’ll see .1-.2” water value (WV) between 4am and 4pm. Maybe we’ll get lucky and see a switch to snowflakes mid-morning. The precip will taper off in the afternoon and pick up again overnight, for another .2” WV rain overnight. Wind today will be NW 35 early, NW 25 midday and evening, and NW 40 overnight.

Sunday starts off with drizzle. The freezing level will be 7500′ early, 9000′ midday and 10,000′ in the evening. We’ll see less than .2” WV between 4am and 4pm with partial clearing in the afternoon. Then another round of light showers come overnight for another less than .2” WV from 4pm Sunday through Monday morning. All of that will fall as rain/drizzle/mist. Wind Sunday will be NW 35 early, NW 30 midday and WNW 20 in the evening.

Monday starts cloudy with drizzle/mist, becoming clear in the afternoon. The snow level will be 10,000′ early and 7500′ in the afternoon. We’ll see .1-.3” WV of rain during the day. Wind will be W 30 early, rising to W 45 mid-morning.

Argh.

Plain Old Local Weather

49 degrees is a good start to a winter play day at river level. It’s going to be a little cooler midday, but still pleasant enough to get outside. Maybe a few sprinkles. Definitely some west wind. Tomorrow will be near 50 degrees all day with west wind and a few sprinkles possible. Monday looks similar.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Looks like a windy weekend in the Gorge. Gradients this morning are .14/.10, and that’ll be enough for a decent day on the river. Expect the wind to be in the 20-24 range near Hood River today with 26-30 east of Hood River.

Tomorrow brings 15-18 near Hood River with 21-24 further east. On Monday, expect 21-24 in the morning with 26-30 in the afternoon as a (not-very) cold front swings across the Cascades.

Road and Mountain Biking

Muddy, muddy, muddy. Time to put cross tires on all the road bikes and ride the gravel roads.

Events – email me if I’ve missed any outdoor-related events

Today is the KringleKrawl Santa bike ride at Dirty Fingers at 3pm. Tonight at the EasyCLIMB in Cascade Locks, starting at 5pm, it’s the night-light winter solstice bike ride with the DimWits. They usually have a bonfire and hot dogs, but I’m sure they wouldn’t object to you bringing a potluck dish or cookies.

Have an awesome day today!

Temira
