Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

So please take a moment to click one of the buttons below. Donate $19.99 or more (how much does this forecast enhance your life?) and get the email in your inbox. Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

Random Morning Thoughts

I like open-ended questions. I never know where they will take me…

Wind guessings, prognosticatings and musings

Despite the fact that it’s 100% gloomy out there today, you’ll have a chance to get on the water. Yes. Believe it. As an upper level low moves onshore near Vancouver Island (Canadians have all the fun, don’t they?), we’ll see the wind pick up in the eastern regions of the Gorge. High pressure building off the coast will amplify this situation: expect 28-32 east of The Dalles after noon today, with a chance of wind at Doug’s/Rowena/Lyle.

That offshore high hangs around tomorrow, driving westerlies at 21-24 from The Dalles to Arlington. We’ll likely see slightly stronger wind before noon, but it will fade as the day goes on, so I’m sticking with my 21-24 story. Why? Because which of you are really going to drive to Arlington before noon?

Wednesday will probably bring east wind of some sort.

Plain old weather

It’s raining. Sprinkling, really. This will continue this morning, and then, as that low moves inland, we’ll see the clouds start to break up. Sunshine will dominate the eastern Gorge this afternoon. Tomorrow sees random showers in the western Gorge with sunshine out east. We’ll probably see that gloomy inversion crap on Wednesday, followed by afternoon sun.

The snow level will be at 6000′ this morning, dropping to 5500′ this afternoon. Tomorrow sees the snow level at 5500′ early and 5000′ late. On Sunny Wednesday, the free air freezing level will be 8000′. Total snow accumulation over the next couple of days will be 2-5” at 5000′.

Mountain biking

It seems to be raining on our trails this morning.

Events n’ stuff – Please email with upcoming events related to the outdoors

There are two events tonight: At 6:15pm, Shortt Supply hosts a talk by Kevin Hanson, Board Certified
Orthopedic Clinical Specialist. You’ll learn about running mechanics, proper footwear (“barefoot running shoes” is one of my favorite phrases…), and lots of other stuff. Snacks provided by Shortt Supply will fuel your brain while it learns.

At 7pm, Dog River Coffee hosts this year’s Powderwhore’s movie. Someday I’d like to be featured in a tele skiing movie, because those people ski some amazing snow and I want to do that. $10. 7pm.

Have an awesome day today!
