Friday. 10/4. Gorge wind. Events. Perfect dirt.

Thanks for being here all summer for the wind forecast. It’s fall now, and that means it’s time for … more windsurfing and kiting! No, it’s time to think about skiing. You can get the best darned Mt. Hood snow forecast right here, all winter long, staring around November 15th. Bookmark this page. Come back…

Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

So please take a moment to click one of the buttons below. Donate $19.99 or more (how much does this forecast enhance your life?) and get the email in your inbox. Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

Random Morning Thoughts

Today is the feast day of St. Francis of Assisi, who stood up for the poor, for all living creatures, and for the environment. I’ll remind you that I’m not religious at all. I just like St. Francis and the Pope who took his name. I leave you with a Pope Francis quote I’ve referenced before: “We must restore hope to young people, help the old, be open to the future, spread love… We need to include the excluded and preach peace.” May these words guide your day.

Wind guessings, prognosticatings and musings

Hope everyone had a good time on the river yesterday! Today sees the wind switch directions: you can expect a build to E 15-18 at Stevenson and Rooster by mid-morning. Tomorrow sees stronger wind: expect 21-24 at Steven’s Locks and 25-29 at Rooster Rock. Sunday looks light.

Plain old weather

In weather today, it’ll start out cold, but hey, at least it’s not gloomy. Enjoy the sun! NOAA is insistent on fog development due to an inversion on Saturday and Sunday. I am not very good at forecasting the inversion. I have no idea if it’ll be sunny or gloomy tomorrow. The model I use says “no way”, but NOAA says “for sure”, so I’ll just go with, “I hope not” and leave it at that.

The next chance for rain appears to be late Sunday.

Mountain biking

Perfect dirt in Post. Perfect dirt on Syncline. Perfect dirt on Whoopdee. Perfect dirt everywhere. And, according to random FB posts, perfect dirt and bikes where there shouldn’t be bikes. Yet another consequence of shutting down the government: bike trail poachers.

Events n’ stuff

Today, kids, is First Friday in downtown Hood River. Technically, it’s this evening. But you know what I mean: head downtown for art, drinks and socializing. Tonight’s also the opening of the Mt. Hood Ski Patrol snowsports swap in Hillsboro.

Tomorrow is the Gorge Green Home Tour in Hood River and Mosier, bike-friendly this year. There’s a work party at the Hatchery from 9am-noon. The Grominator skate contest goes off at the Hood River Skate Park starting at 9am. And if you’re a runner, hit up the Two Dam Punks 10k in Stabler.

On Sunday, Ashland (yeah, way the hell down there) hosts the Super D bike race, and The Dalles (way the hell out east there) hosts the Superhero kids run/walk.

Have an awesome day today!

Temira
