Meet your forecaster: Temira

Temira is displeased this morning. Temira has girlfriends who are cherry farmers, and this rainy weather is not good for Temira’s friends. Rain can split cherries, especially if the rain is followed by hot weather. At least we’re not seeing thunderstorms followed by hot, muggy weather. But still. This rain might be good for you mountain bikers and gardeners, but it’s bad news for the Hood River Valley as a whole.

Wind forecast

And there’s more rain coming – on-and-off showers today precede a heavy drenching in the wee hours overnight. We should be back to dry, sunny weather on Thursday. In between now and then, expect gusty, inconsistent wind in the Gorge.

We’ll see up-and-down 15-18 in the central Gorge today, filling in out east later. Periods of 17-21 are possible. Tomorrow starts light, picking up to gusty, up-and-down, unreliable 15-18 in the afternoon, with periods of [insert adjectives describing gusty wind] 22-26 possible at Doug’s and Maryhill. Wednesday also starts off light, picking up to the upper teens or low twenties in the afternoon.

Cycling news

Goodbye Mt. Hood Cycling Classic. I’ll miss you. Thank you Chad Sperry and team for putting on such a wonderful event for so many years. If any of you reading this are big corporate sponsors, we here in Hood River would love it if you could help bring back our favorite bike race before it’s gone forever.

In events, the casual Ride Around the Gorge bike ride leaves Mosier at 5:30 for an hour or so cruise, and the Mountain View Cycles booze cruise mellow bike ride leaves the shop at 6:30. If you’re doing the shop ride, please, no spandex, and no clipless pedals, but definitely bring a helmet and lights. I’m going to assume both of these rides are “weather permitting.” You too should assume this.

Other stuff

Looking ahead to next weekend, it’s Windfest, where you can demo windsurfing gear and take free clinics. Along with Windfest, there’s a swap meet on Sunday. And the Blowout on Saturday or Sunday. On Friday and Saturday, Columbia Center for the Arts hosts the REEL paddling film festival, with two evenings of all sorts of kayaking and SUPing movies. Yes, we are giving away two tickets. Email with your (full sentence required) request to be in the drawing. Last but not least, there’s sailboat racing Friday-Sunday in Cascade Locks.
