This is a beautiful 19.2 mile out-and-back trail through dense old-growth forest, past waterfalls, and along the gorgeous Lewis River. A few technical sections complement hard, steep climbs. Acrophobics will be stepping off their bikes for several narrow, rocky sections alongside steep cliffs.
The trail can be ridden as an out-and-back, or as a one-way trail with the return trip along the 90 road.
Because this ride is a long ways from Hood River, and close to Plains of Abraham, it’s worth getting a campsite at Lewis River Campground and heading to St. Helens for a long weekend of riding.
To get there: From Hood River, cross the Port of Hood River bridge ($.75 each way), and head west on SR 14. Just after passing over the Wind River and before you reach Stevenson, head north on forest road 30. Stay on forest road 30 through Carson and over Old Man Pass. A couple of miles after cresting Old Man Pass, turn left on Curly Creek Road and follow this down to forest road 90. Go right on road 90 and then left on forest road 9039 after a few hundred yards. Park at the river and look for the trail heading upstream on the other side of the road. For an easier ride, continue along the road to the Lewis River Campground, and ride the same trail downhill.

Rode it the last friday in May 2010 — flushed a couger on the ground about 20 yards off the trail on the high plateau just south of the road crossing… probably no more than 1.5-2 miles south of Lower Falls Campground. Didn’t hang around long to see if it was just eyeing over the edge, gaurding a kill, chilling with any kittens, etc.
Kirby, thank you! As of 5/23/2010, Lewis River now has 3 downed trees, but is totally open and rideable.
Rode Lewis River last weekend, May 15-16 2010, and the trail is clear of trees and in great shape. Fun ride! The river is still pretty high and cold for much swimming.
I was there yesterday, Saturday 8/2. Very little weekend bike traffic on this amazing trail. Wore my suit under my bike clothes and jumped into the river every chance I got. BEST swimming around, in my opinion. It’s an easy daytrip from HR, just remember to pack a cooler. Camping not needed at all!
Lewis River is open and clear, with a couple of reroutes.
