Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

So please take a moment to click one of the buttons below. Donate $19.99 or more (how much does this forecast enhance your life?) and get the email in your inbox. Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast – 5000′

Good morning,

Just a friendly reminder from my friends at Hood River Rotary: January 21st is the annual Rotary Ski Night at Meadows. Tickets for skiing from 3-9pm are just $10 in advance, $15 at the gate. You can purchase advance tickets now and support a great cause, whether you plan on going or not.

The forecast for the next four days on Mt. Hood is as follows: Clear sky. 50 degrees by midday. Free air freezing level at 10-11,000′. NW wind at 15mph today, W at 20 on Friday, increasing to WNW 25-30 in the afternoon. Saturday brings WNW wind at 25-30 in the morning, dropping to 20 in the afternoon. Sunday has NW wind at 20mph.

The Clymb: free membership. Cheap gear. Temira approves. Click to join.

It looks like this high pressure will break down on Tuesday afternoon, with snow starting late Tuesday or early Wednesday, but we’ll have to wait a couple of days for the details on precip totals.

In lowland news, the biking roundup: Syncline proper: muddy mess. Please avoid due to freeze-thaw. Hospital Hill frontside: rideable. Millenium/Sidehill Dodger: not rideable. Backside/bench area: either snowy or freeze-thaw. Gorge #400: frozen solid and snow-free. Good to go. EasyCLIMB: unknown, but hosting a work party on Saturday morning. Tower of Power: good question. Someone go check it out, please, or just call Paco, because he rides it every day. Not only can he fix your car, he can ride that horrible doubletrack, no problem.

With east wind through the Gorge today, expect cold temps and cloudy sky. Easterlies, should you care, blow at 25-35 today, driven by a gradient currently at E .15. Easterlies continue at 15-18 tomorrow morning, before backing off. Saturday brings light east wind. Models are having a hard time with the inversion, but it looks like it may break up on Friday in the afternoon, allowing the clouds to clear out. If you’d prefer to get above the clouds, the top is around 2000′. I had this great idea yesterday that Glenwood would be sunny and warm, being just high enough to escape the inversion. But on further research, the answer to that query was a big negative: 15 degrees and gloomy. So, no road biking up there.

In events, Dirty Fingers hosts Lance Armstrong’s Oprah interview, “CONFESSTRONG”, tonight at 6pm. Apparently the interview is so long that a second broadcast will happen tomorrow night. Also tonight, at 5:45pm, the HRATS have a board meeting. On Saturday at 9:30am, NWTA has a work party on the easyCLIMB trail. They billed it as the “worst work party of the year”, but with the forecast looking dry and cool and maybe even sunny, it could be a great work party after all!

Have an awesome day today!

Temira
