Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Saturday

I forgot to mention yesterday that it’s the Geminid meteor shower right now, along with bonus meteors from Comet Wirtanen. The peak is tonight, and it should be a good show if you can find clear sky anywhere. In other news, tomorrow is the Da Kine warehouse sale from 12-4 in The Dalles. It’s also the Hood River Weather website annual party at Pfriem starting at 4:30. Waucoma Club shows the Jeremy Jones snowboarding movie “Further” at 6:30 (all ages) and 9pm (21+). On Saturday, starting at 5pm, it’s the Dirty Fingers “Naughty North Pole” Christmas party. On Sunday from 10-2, there’s a work party at the Cascade Locks easyCLIMB trail.

In general Gorge weather news, expect dry weather today (Syncline, anyone?). Expect light snow flurries tomorrow morning followed by a few sprinkles in the afternoon. On Saturday, expect a cloudy morning with rain moving in late afternoon. East wind picks up to 20-24 today. Tomorrow starts with light east wind, switching to light west late.

Up on the mountain, it’s a clear, cold morning. High clouds will move in early afternoon, but there won’t be any precipitation. The freezing level will be 1000-1500′ today, with light north wind becoming light and variable becoming SW 10-15 in the evening.

The freezing level Friday morning will be at the surface in the Gorge, and 500′ elsewhere. Light flurries on the mountain start around 7am, with .1-.2” water value (WV) falling by 4pm, for 1-2” of new, at the most. Wind Friday will be SW 10-15 early becoming W 15-20 early afternoon and NW 15-20 in the evening.

Saturday starts off cloudy with the freezing level around 1000′. The freezing level will rise to 1500′ midday and 2500′ in the evening. Snow starts falling around 1pm, becoming heavy between 4pm and 1am, with flurries after that. Total precip will be .5” WV by 1am, for 5-7” of new snow. Wind will be WNW 20-25 early, becoming SW 15-20 by 1pm and SW 30-40 in the evening.

Sunday starts off loudy with heavy snow starting around 1pm. The freezing level will be 1500′ early, rising quite a bit by 7pm. The first .3-.4” WV should fall as snow, for 3-4” of heavy new snow, but what happens after that is, as yet, unpredictable, as the eventual track of this storm is going to determine whether we stay all-snow-all-the-time or we see a switch to rain at some point Sunday…

So, no real prediction yet for Sunday afternoon/evening, and no predictions further out that that, other than that we do not, by any stretch of model interpretation, seem to be heading for a dry stretch. The precipitation will continue…

Have an awesome day today!

Temira
