6/11 Gorge wind and events

Good morning, Sponsoring the report this week is a reluctant sponsor, Pine Street Bakery in Hood River. It’s not open yet, but it will be open, either June 12 or 13th. Why are they reluctant? “Temira, we want to have a soft opening,” they said. “No, I want you to be busy,” I said. “You…

Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

So please take a moment to click one of the buttons below. Donate $19.99 or more (how much does this forecast enhance your life?) and get the email in your inbox. Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

Good morning,

Sponsoring the report this week is a reluctant sponsor, Pine Street Bakery in Hood River. It’s not open yet, but it will be open, either June 12 or 13th. Why are they reluctant? “Temira, we want to have a soft opening,” they said. “No, I want you to be busy,” I said. “You have yummy things to sell, and they shouldn’t go to waste. Plus, you’re my favorite people, and I want to advertise for you.” They rolled their eyes at me and shook their heads and gave up. Pine Street Bakery, opening soon on 12th Street in the Heights.

Before you read on, please remember that this report is brought to you free of charge. Nobody pays me to write it for you. If you think the report saves you time, money, or keeps you in the loop about cool things going on in the Gorge, please take the time to make a donation to keep the report coming. Thank you for your support!

First off, I’d like to give a big shoutout to all the people who volunteered to help with the Mt. Hood Cycling Classic over the last few days. The race couldn’t have happened without you! Congratulations also to all our local riders who finished the super tough three summits course yesterday. I rode along with one of the official cars. If you like rally driving on narrow paved roads filled with skinny, spandex-clad people, this is the volunteer position for you.

This morning brings excellent road biking conditions: no wind. Not so this afternoon.

Well start off with light west wind through the Gorge this morning, perfect road biking conditions, but by afternoon, as a system approaches the coast in the afternoon, we’ll see the wind pick up to 22-25 at Stevenson and 18-23 from Hood River east to Arlington.

It looks like we’ll start out with more clouds and maybe some sprinkles tomorrow, with more west wind. 15-18 east of Hood River to start picks up to 23-26 in the afternoon. Wednesday brings another round of strong west wind, starting at 21-23 in the morning and picking up to 25-29 in the afternoon.

Mark your calendar for next weekend. Coming up on Saturday: The Backyard Half Marathon in White Salmon. That’s 13 tough miles of climbing (1800′ or so) and then descending for a good cause – the White Salmon High School Cross Country Team. The race is free, but donations are encouraged. After all, you’re paying pretty low taxes right now. You might as well support your local school system. Follow that up with a pig roast fundraiser in Rheingarten Park, brought to you by Henni’s, and benefiting the White Salmon Pool. After all, your taxes are pretty low right now, so you might as well support your local pool.

Have an awesome day today!

Temira
