Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

There’s really not much to say about the weather on Mt. Hood for the next week to ten days, unless something changes drastically in the weather picture.

Today looks mostly clear, with some high clouds brushing the area from a nearby no-precip frontal system. Winds will be N to NW in the 20-30+ range. The freezing level is theoretically going to be around 1000’, but obviously, that’s not the case with temps in the upper 30’s at 6000’. Call it above freezing on the slopes today and call it good.

Tomorrow starts off with a similar picture: clear skies, N wind at 20-30, the freezing level around 6000’. Ditto on Sunday. Ditto on Monday, with the freezing level rising to 9000’ on Monday afternoon and the wind finally dying back to light and variable.

As long as this blocking high pressure system sits off the west coast, we’re stuck in this pattern. At least the ridge is also keeping bitterly cold temps from draining into the PNW from Canada…

If we saw this setup in summer, I’d be calling for day after day of strong westerlies in the Gorge. Unfortunately, with cold overnight temps and (weaker) high pressure in the desert, it’s not quite an ideal setup. However, we’ll see westerlies at 17-20 today, tomorrow, and Sunday morning, before the wind dies on Sunday afternoon. Monday looks weak, but Tuesday holds potential for a big westerly afternoon as a weak weather system sneaks by the ridge, leaving us with high pressure off the coast and low pressure in the desert. I want to hear from you if you try launching from the new sandbar. Watch out for quicksand. No, seriously. Watch out for quicksand.

Have an awesome day today!

Temira
