MT. HOOD SNOW FORECAST
Hey skiers and snowboarders! There’s basically no new snow coming in the next ten days, but there sure is a lot of sunshine. Snow conditions will slowly make their way from hardpack to granular, and from granular to corn as afternoon temps stay warm. Starting Friday, sunny weather continues, but afternoon temps will stay below freezing. Given the low sun angle, it’s questionable if the snow will warm enough to switch to corn. But hey, we’ll still have sun, and sun + snow is a great way to spend the weekend!
Wednesday’s kicking off warm and clear on the slopes. Today’s free air freezing level will be around 10,000′, and temps will max out in the upper 40s. Temps at 5000′ (and at Teacup) started in the upper 30s. Wind will be basically calm all day and will turn to W 20 overnight.
A dry system swings through on Thursday and drives temps down. Don’t be fooled by the warm morning; temps drop below freezing by sunset or earlier. The free air freezing level will be 10,000′ in the morning, 3000′ in the afternoon, and down near 0′ overnight. Wind: W 20 early, W 30 midday, NW 20-30 in the afternoon, and N 10-20 after midnight.
Liking this forecast?
Weekend weather looks clear and cold. Temps should stay below freezing on the slopes. Caveat: cold air on the east side will be running into somewhat warmer air on the west side. It’s possible there will be pockets of above-freezing air. Either way, we’ll see sun all weekend with the exception of a few high clouds on Saturday afternoon. Wind will be E 15 Saturday morning becoming variable to 10 in the afternoon. Sunday starts with N 10, picks up to NE 15-20, and turns to E 30 overnight.
Next week starts cold, clear, and windy. Depending on how deep this cold air gets and just how cold it is, we could see the east wind pick up enough to affect lifts at Timberline. Meadows’ lifts seem to handle easterlies better. Not sure about Skibowl. Anyway… next chance for precip isn’t until the end of next week, and ensembles aren’t all-in on that. So, let’s enjoy sunshine!

GORGE WIND FORECAST
Hi friends! Easterlies are on tap today, westerlies tomorrow, and then a rest day is in the cards Friday. Temps turn cooler this weekend as high pressure settles inland. This sets up an extended period of strong, cold east wind. Wednesday kicks off with 0.10 gradient and easterlies: 40mph at Iwash (Rooster) Rock and 20mph at Stevenson and Viento. Stevenson rises to 25-30mph mid-morning before dropping this afternoon. Iwash holds near 40mph most of the day before dipping just a few mph in the afternoon. River flow over the last 24 hours was 105-153kcfs, river temp is 42.98F, and high temp forecast is 42F with sun in the windy zones.
The timing of Thursday’s weather system has been trending earlier, which is a good thing given my work schedule! Westerlies should be present at 5-10mph early in the morning. By mid-morning, Stevenson to Mosier, or perhaps Viento to Hood River, will be gusty 23-26. Models hint at 25-28 late morning to early afternoon from Stevenson to Doug’s. East of there: probably just 14-17mph; this appears to be a Hatch-focused event. Models do suggest clouds will move in after 1pm. If that happens, wind under the clouds will turn gustier and drop in speed. High temp: 48F with sun early and clouds later. Friday starts calm and turns easterly at 10-15mph in the usual spots. High temp: 42F with mostly clear sky in the afternoon. Much stronger, but also much colder, east wind is in the cards Saturday through at least Tuesday. Have fun out there!

Temps start in the low 30s and rise to the low 40s. Calm wind. No rainbows.
TEMIRA’S AWESOME TRAVEL ADVISORY SERVICE (DETAILED GORGE WEATHER FORECAST)
Good morning, neighbors! There’s so little “weather” to talk about that TATAS might take a day or two off and clean their house instead. Okay, they aren’t going to clean their house, but they might cuddle with the cat. What do I mean by “little weather” – while, things look dry for the next ten days or so. Most exciting thing happening is some sub-freezing temps for a couple days.
WEDNESDAY
Speaking of, Glenwood started today with a low of 19F and a dewpoint of 18F. More of that is coming.
Wednesday brings lots of clear sky and sunshine IF you get above the Nothing OR you head west of Home Valley. In the west, easterlies at 30-40mph stir up the atmosphere and dissipate the clouds. High temps today will be in the low 40s where it’s sunny and in the mid 30s in the Nothing.
THURSDAY
Alaska donates to the cause on Thursday and sends a weak, dry system through the PNW. Main effect: west wind and warmer temps for the lowlands. Starting mid-morning, we’ll have westerlies at 20-30mph from Stevenson to Mosier. Nothing departs and sunshine returns. In the afternoon, clouds push as far east as Mosier. A few raindrops are possible, but even in the far western Gorge, precip will be well under the “it’s raining” measurement of 0.1”. What you’ll really notice with this system is the drop in temps – as it arrives, lowland temps rise to the upper 40s. As it passes, they drop. We’ll be left with sub-freezing temps everywhere by Friday morning.
FRIDAY ONWARD
Cooler weather is forecast for the weekend. For the first couple days of this, Nothing is likely in the morning. Day by day, the dewpoint (moisture in the air, essentially) falls. Eventually, clouds won’t be able to form, and we’ll be left with sunshine. Expect strong easterlies in the usual spots starting Saturday and continuing for a while.
Just how cold will it get? Probably not super-duper cold: models have highs in the low-mid 30s for the weekend. Lows, however, could be much colder, especially as the dewpoint really falls at the start of next week. Now if you’ll excuse me, I need to get above the Nothing. Safe travels. -TATAS
