Gorge Wind Forecast
Hi friends! The last of the shorty wetsuit weather is here – looks like temps will fall below 60 and pretty much stay there starting Wednesday. But that doesn’t mean we won’t have wind! A series of weather systems impacts the Gorge this week. The latter couple of those come with stronger offshore high pressure and the possibility of wind out east. Let’s take a look!

Monday starts pretty much dead calm – pressures were 30.08/30.08/30.06. A weak weather system moves in today, gets hung up, and kicks the west wind back into gear. By late morning or early afternoon, we’ll have gusty 15-18 from Stevenson to Rufus. Mid-afternoon wind rises to gusty 18-21 from Lyle to Arlington. West of Lyle, the wind depends on how far inland the low clouds from this system make it. We’ll probably (but not certainly) see a short burst of stronger wind from Stevenson to Mosier, perhaps 20-23mph, just ahead of the incoming weather system. The wind then drops to 11-14 or so west of Lyle and stays down into the evening. River flow over the last 24 hours was 66-83kcfs, river temp is 64.22F, and high temp forecast is 72F.
Tuesday sees another system swing through, and that gives us another round of gusty westerlies. The day starts calm-ish. By late morning, we’ll have gusty 11-14 from Stevenson to Mosier. Afternoon wind rises to gusty 17-20 from Stevenson to to Rufus. Between Rufus and Threemile, we could see an evening push of gusty 22-25 as areas west of Rufus drop to 12-15. Stevenson is likely to see drizzle much of the day. High temp: 68F. And that’s it for warm weather!

A stronger system arrives on Wednesday. Models are currently forecasting the wind to stay below 15mph west of Lyle. They give us a shot at mid to upper 20s east of Lyle. But they also have drizzle extending all the way to Boardman after 11am. Rain does not preclude wind, but you should be aware of what you’re getting into! It appears, if the timing holds, that the rain and clouds will mostly clear out late afternoon giving us a better shot at higher-quality, rain-free wind. High temp: 59F.

Extended: Thursday looks similar to Wednesday – the possibility of a decent day east of The Dalles exists. We then have a much quieter day on Friday as high pressure returns along with sunshine and briefly warmer temps. Looking at the weekend, models display a fair bit of range. Temps start in the upper 40s and rise to the upper 50’s. Light to moderate westerlies. 97% chance of rainbows.

Cycling
All vehicles on HR County forest roads need a gallon of water and a shovel – it’s fire season. Please see the HRATS/Hood River County for complete details on Post Canyon closures. Newly reopened in Post: lower Trail 100 paralleling the lower part of Post Canyon Road. The Twin Tunnels Trail between Hood River and Mosier has reopened. Kreps and Green Diamond Lands have reopened. That includes Whoopdee, Hospital Hill, and Underwood. Closed: Gorge 400 and lots of other trails due to the Whisky Creek Fire. Trail near Mt. Adams due to the Williams Mine Fire. Remember that E-bikes are not allowed on USFS non-moto trails. They are allowed on moto trails.
