Gorge Wind Forecast

Hi friends! It’s Sunday, and it’s more of a fishing day than a windsport day. But don’t you worry – there’s some wind in the cards on Monday and Tuesday. After that: easterlies Wednesday and Thursday, most likely. Models hint at westerlies returning for Labor Day weekend as a heat low shifts inland. Maybe. I’ll be heading out on retreat Friday – I’ll try and get you forecasts between now and then so you can plan!

Today is Sunday. It’s calm to start. We have a light west gradient across the Cascades: 30.25/30.22 for PDX-DLS of 0.03. Out east: flat gradient. We’ll see westerlies rise to 10-13mph, at best, from Stevenson to The Dalles this afternoon. With 80,000 fish so far in the fall run, that’s your best bet for excitement today. Oh, and the dirt is PERFECT in Post (and probably Falls Creek, Lewis River, and maybe even the 44 Road trails). River flow over the last 24 hours was 88-128kcfs, river temp is 69.08F, and high temp forecast is 77F. Wylde Wind and Water has a free intermediate wingfoil clinic for not-male people at the Event Site from 10-2 today. Not sure what the plan is with such light wind forecast.

A system approaches on Monday and gives just enough nudge in the afternoon for some wind. The day starts calm as a cat sleeping in a box under a bed. Mid-afternoon sees the system’s influence take hold; we should see gusty 18-21 from Stevenson to Doug’s. That wind fills in all the way from Stevenson to Arlington in the afternoon. Expect it to be gusty, to drop at Swell as other locations fill in, and for Rufus to be the wrong direction for steady conditions. High temp: 82F.

That system moves inland on Tuesday, and very strong high pressure builds offshore behind it. I suspect models are underestimating the wind. Figuring out where the strongest wind will set up is tricky; drizzle and clouds are forecast west of Mosier early. As of right now (subject to change), we have 12-15 from Stevenson to Doug’s to start with 18-21 in the eastern Gorge. Viento and Swell could see a brief mid-20’s run before dropping just after dawn. Models keep areas west of The Dalles in the 14-17 range until mid-afternoon. East: 18-21. Watch the afternoon for best results. As of this morning, models suggest gusty 21-24 from Stevenson to Mosier with 23-26 from Lyle to Rufus, maybe Arlington, from 2-5pm. After that: quite a bit less. This forecast is likely to change. High temp: 71F for Hood River and 74F for Arlington.

Extended: Ridging and warmer weather takes over on Wednesday. The wind turns easterly for Wednesday and Thursday. Beyond that, we’ll be waiting for the heat low to shift inland and turn flow onshore (westerly). Cluster model has various ideas of when that will happen. Looking at the ensembles, we see a good shot at light westerlies for the weekend followed by major uncertainty (20 degree range in the high temp forecast) starting Labor Day. Have a great day today!
