Gorge Wind Forecast
Hi friends! That was quite the day we had yesterday, wasn’t it? We’ll have another big one today, and that’ll be followed by an extended period of lesser, but still windy, days. Before I dive in, a couple things: first, it’s been very busy at the Hatch. The Hatch manager has asked that we make sure all vehicles are all the way off the road. You can assist with this by creating space for others to double-park. If you’re there early, be generous. Pull all the way forward so another car can get behind you. If you’re double-parking, leave the car you double-parked a note with the location of your keys. Not willing to do that? Park somewhere where double-parking isn’t an option (like the Point). We all gotta work together (like we did back in the “good old days”) to make sure everyone can use the Hatch!

On to today’s forecast… it’s Monday, and we started with massive gradients. Pressures were 30.12/29.93/29.86 for gradients of 0.19 (wow!) and 0.07 (enough). Scattered marine clouds were past Hood River to start the day, and this had the Hatch under-performing in the low teens with Viento in the upper 20s. Give it a couple hours to kick in; the combo of strong offshore high pressure, clouds to the west, a stable setup, and a heat low in the desert will drive the wind way up. When the clouds burn back, Corridor readings will jump. Call the morning “build time”. (EDIT: it jumped from 13mph to 25mph at the Hatch while I was writing this. You can go play now) By mid to late morning, you should find 29-32 from Viento to Rufus. Stevenson: you’ll have to wait for the clouds to burn off. Until they do, the wind will be up-and-down. Afternoon westerlies rise to 32-35 from Mosier to Threemile with 28-31 at Boardman. From Stevenson to Hood River, afternoon wind will be 26-29+. River flow over the last 24 hours was 96-199kcfs, river temp is 71.24F, and high temp forecast is 78 for Hood River, 87 for Arlington, and 98 for Pasco. Stay safe out there. Keep an eye on your buddies. Check your leashes for wear. Call in your Amayah’s (Biggs) order in advance for best results.
Tuesday won’t quite be a rest day, but it will be lighter than Monday by quite a bit. Best chance for strong wind will be Dawn Patrol – call it 24-27 at Viento, Swell, and Mosier. Briefly. Readings will be on a downward slide through the morning; they land late morning at 12-15 from Stevenson to Hood River (less to the east) thanks to a low spinning offshore. Afternoon westerlies rise to gusty 15-19 from Stevenson to Mosier with 10-13 from Lyle to Doug’s. High temp: 86F.

A weak system swings inland early Wednesday. The day starts with gusty 20-23 form Viento to Mosier with 11-14 to the east. Midday wind rises to gusty 23-26 from Stevenson to Mosier. The Hatch may choose not to participate due to the activity aloft. Afternoon: gusty 19-23 west of Mosier with 26-29 from Mosier or Lyle to Arlington. High temp: 84F.

Extended: relatively active offshore weather (for this time of year, anyway) contributes some up-and-down to the wind over the next week or so. But don’t you worry; it’ll be plenty windy (with pleasant temps) every day through the weekend. Ensembles have today, Wednesday, and Thursday as the windiest days for the next week, but there’s quite a bit of range in the outcomes for next Friday through next Monday. Not-windy isn’t one of those outcomes. Enjoy!

Tonight, 7/19, is the Women of the Wind get together. 5pm at the Doug’s school space with kiter and winger pointers and on-water sesh at 5:30. There’s a weekly social for Wind Johnnies (The Gorge Wind Social) at Ferment Brewing every 3rd Monday this summer. There’s a free community paddle at Wylde Wind and Water every Saturday at 10am (gear provided, all ages). They also have a free community wingfoil orientation every Thursday at 5:30pm at the Hook (all ages, gear provided). Northwave and GoFoil sponsor wingfoil races on Tuesday evenings.
The Columbia Gorge Junior Kayak Club offers free roll sessions (gear provided) for kids at the Hood River Pool every other Tuesday from 5:30 to 7pm. Visit their website for more deets: https://www.columbiagorgejuniorkayakclub.org/. Amayah’s offers a free meal every First Thursday from 1pm to 4pm. Regular weekly events:. NK Studio’s by-donation Tuesday morning yoga class is back. Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. There’s meditation with monks at 5:15pm (an hour) and 6:30pm (30 minutes plus a talk) at Yoga Samadhi in White Salmon. Columbia Gorge Tri Club meets at Mayer State Park at 6pm Tuesdays. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, there’s a run from Pine Street Bakery. On Fridays at 2:30pm, there’s a free meditation and stretching class at Yoga Samadhi. On Saturday at 9am, there’s a by-donation outdoor group fitness on the 2rd floor deck about Ferment Brewing.
Cycling
Ape Canyon and Plains of Abraham are open per USFS website. Patchy snow and downed trees were there as of last report, 6/24. 44 Road trails are all open and clear, including upper 450 and Fifteenmile. As of 6/30, Gunsight is open. Boulder Lakes and other more remote trails are not bucked out yet. Remember that E-bikes are not allowed on USFS non-moto trails. They are allowed on moto trails.
