Gorge Wind Forecast

Hi friends! Westerlies continue their streak through at least Monday – Saturday, Sunday, and Monday look quite similar. The overall stable pattern breaks down Tuesday into Wednesday and knocks the wind down several notches. Tuesday’s almost certainly the lightest day of the week. Beyond Wednesday, there’s a fair bit of model disagreement on the details, but a general consensus on onshore flow and west wind. Don’t forget that the Hood River Bridge is closed 7pm-7am daily through the 21st of July!

Saturday starts with pressures of 30.00/29.92/29.92 for gradients of W 0.08 / flat. Viento was the only windy spot early with W 21-24. By late morning, we’ll have 20-23 from Stevenson to Hood River with 17-20 at Mosier and light wind to the east. Afternoon westerlies hold at 20-23 and fill in all the way from Stevenson to Avery and perhaps even Rufus. Models nudge the wind up to 22-25 from Lyle to Arlington in the evening and keep it around 20mph west of Lyle. River flow over the last 24 hours was 94-203kcfs (lowest in the morning), river temp is 69.26F, and high temp forecast is 91F for Hood River and 100F for Arlington.

Models suggest a nearly identical day on Sunday, although slightly hotter weather in the Columbia Basin should give us slightly stronger wind in the afternoon. The day starts with 19-22 from Viento to Swell and 10-13 east of Swell to Rufus. We’ll see a quick jump to 21-24 from Stevenson to Mosier with 10-13 continuing east of Mosier to Arlington. Afternoon westerlies will be gusty 19-23 at Swell with 24-27 other locations from Stevenson to Arlington. A period of 26-29 from Lyle to Rufus is possible mid to late afternoon. In a fun twist, models have Threemile and Boardman joining at 23-26 for the evening session. High temp: 90F for Hood River and 97F for Arlington. 102F for Hermiston.

On Monday, the offshore high lessens in strength and tilts positive. This generally results in gustier conditions. As of right now, the deterministic GFS has us with 230-23 from Viento to Swell early with 22-25 from Stevenson to Avery in the afternoon. Diving into the ensembles, we see a slightly different picture; they’re spreading the wind farther east and making it a little stronger. Looks like we’ll need to wait a day and see how they are coalescing.

Extended: on Tuesday, a small blip offshore knocks the northeast Pacific high down and sends some energy into the region. This destabilizes the atmosphere and knocks the wind down. As of this morning, models keep us below 15mph all day. That energy sticks around for at least part of Wednesday. It’s impossible to predict the wind strength yet, but saying it’ll be up-and-down and a bit unreliable is probably a safe call. Generally speaking, models settle us back into a west wind pattern late Wednesday onward. Temps stay warmer than normal (normal is 80ish) for the extended period. That’s perfect for spending time in the river. Enjoy!
