Gorge Wind Forecast
Hi friends! What a heat wave it has been – just enough wind to get many of you on the water each afternoon. That’s a great way to beat the heat! We’ll see another round of late westerlies today followed by 10 degrees less heat and 10mph+ more wind starting tomorrow. Looks like a great week to play in the river. Remember that the Gorge Downwind Champs are happening this week with the race either Thursday or Friday. Expect massive numbers of outrigger canoes and surfskis coming downwind between Stevenson and Bingen every day. Get out of their way, as getting in front of them is like stepping in front of a logging truck. Same for SUP foilers – don’t pass within 30′ downwind of them if they are trying to paddle up. Acceleration and momentum is real, and it’s dangerous. Other safety/legal note: if you are paddling, you need a PFD and a whistle, and if your boat is over 10′, you need an ODFW waterway access permit.

Today’s forecast: it’s going to be hot as a cookie baking on a windshield today, but the wind will get you in the water later. The day started with pressures of 29.84/29.82/29.83 for gradients of W 0.06 and E 0.01. In an impressive and rare showing, Viento was reading zero this morning. Want wind? You’ll be waiting for the afternoon. Around 2pm, westerlies start to build. You’ll find 14-17 from Stevenson to Hood River. Exercise patience, and you should get gusty 20-24 (thanks to an approaching shortwave for the gustiness) from Stevenson to Doug’s with 14-17 at Avery. Just a heads up that this particular setup often ends with the wind arriving later than forecast. Fingers crossed this isn’t one of those times. River flow over the last 24 hours was 144-220kcfs, river temp is 68.00F, and high temp forecast is 105F. Ouch. Stay hydrated. Just cuz you’re in the water doesn’t mean you’re absorbing water!
Cooler, but not cool, air drifts into the west side on Wednesday, the desert stays blazing hot, and offshore high pressure starts to build. Strong pressure gradients are forecast with at least a bit of a stabilizing cap at low levels. If that cap holds, we get very strong wind. Here’s what the models say: dawn patrol from Stevenson or Viento to Mosier at 25-28. Late morning wind rises to 27-31 from Stevenson to Avery with 21-24 at Rufus and 14-17 east to Arlington. In the afternoon, the deterministic GFS has us with 27-31 from Stevenson to Mosier, 31-34 from Lyle to Rufus, and 26-29 at Arlington. To the east: less. That said, the ensemble forecast on the Euro is calling for lesser winds, perhaps 27-30mph max averages. Either way, it looks like a windy day with a great dawn patrol if that’s your only option. High temp: 91F for Hood River and 101F for Arlington.

Looking at Thursday… a shallow and short-lived marine layer makes its way to the metro area. Temperature gradients across the Cascades will be down a bit from Wednesday’s peak. Westerlies will be in the 22-25mph range to start from Viento to Swell with 17-20 at Hood River and Mosier. Afternoon: 23-26 from Stevenson to Doug’s with 17-20 at Avery. High temp: 89F.

Extended: Friday looks to start similar to Thursday, but the GFS currently calls for a stronger afternoon session. As of this morning, that looks like 26-29 from Stevenson to Avery or Rufus. The deeper into the future we go, the more we rely on the ensembles. With the exception of one or two (out of 50), they keep us windy, with windy being 20-25mph averages) all the way through the weekend. Generally speaking, temps will be near 90 degrees all the way through the start of next week and perhaps beyond. Stay hydrated, and don’t forget your rest days. Looks like a great stretch of wind. Tuesday will be hot and sunny. Temps start in the mid 60s (open windows) and finish near 105 (close windows, huddle in an icebox). Calm wind for the first half of the day. Moderate westerlies later. No rainbows. Wednesday will be sunny. Temps start near 70 (open windows?) and end in the low 90s (close them, for sure). Strong westerlies. No rainbows. Thursday will be sunny. Temps start in the low 60s and rise to the upper 80s. Moderately strong westerlies. No rainbows.

There’s a weekly social for Wind Johnnies (The Gorge Wind Social) at Ferment Brewing every 3rd Monday this summer.
The Columbia Gorge Junior Kayak Club offers free roll sessions (gear provided) for kids at the Hood River Pool every other Tuesday from 5:30 to 7pm. Visit their website for more deets: https://www.columbiagorgejuniorkayakclub.org/. Amayah’s offers a free meal every First Thursday from 1pm to 4pm. Regular weekly events:. NK Studio’s by-donation Tuesday morning yoga class is back. Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. There’s meditation with monks at 5:15pm (an hour) and 6:30pm (30 minutes plus a talk) at Yoga Samadhi in White Salmon. Columbia Gorge Tri Club meets at Mayer State Park at 6pm Tuesdays. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, there’s a run from Pine Street Bakery. On Fridays at 2:30pm, there’s a free meditation and stretching class at Yoga Samadhi. On Saturday at 9am, there’s a by-donation outdoor group fitness on the 2rd floor deck about Ferment Brewing.

Cycling
Ape Canyon and Plains of Abraham are open per USFS website. Patchy snow and downed trees were there as of last report, 6/24. 44 Road trails are all open and clear, including upper 450 and Fifteenmile. As of 6/30, Gunsight was bucked, but there was ½ mile section of snow. Boulder Lakes and other more remote trails are not bucked out yet. Remember that E-bikes are not allowed on USFS non-moto trails. They are allowed on moto trails.
