Gorge Wind Forecast
Hi friends! Despite the heat, we’ve been lucking out in the wind department. Models insist that today will be the same, after previously insisting that today would be calm. Stronger wind arrives overnight Tuesday and really ramps up for Wednesday. Looks like the wind will be 20+ all the way through next weekend, assuming the forecast holds. But that’s a long ways out for reliability… Before I forget, the Gorge Downwind Champs start today. Approximately 800 craft will be blasting down the river. Stay out of their way. Don’t cross downwind within about 30′ of these boats (or SUP foilers paddling up); these craft accelerate quickly and cannot stop quickly. Crossing in front of them is like stepping in front of a train or logging truck. You wouldn’t do, so don’t do the former. Keep yourself safe out there!

Monday’s models have shifting from “not really windy at all” to “enough to get you on the water, probably”. 6am pressures were 29.94/29.88/29.89 for gradients of 0.06 and E 0.01. That’s enough for upper teens at Viento to start the day with less than 5mph elsewhere. We’ll see a slow build in the Corridor to 13-16. That’s Stevenson to Hood River. In the evening, we should see that wind fill in from Stevenson to Doug’s and maybe pick up a couple mph more to 15-18. Maybe. River flow over the last 24 hours was 129-212kcfs, river temp is 67.64F, and high temp forecast is 103F. Hot.
We’d previously discussed the possibility of a late westerly blast on Tuesday, but we also discussed the fact that sometimes these things are delayed. As of the latest model run, that delay has come into play; the stronger wind will wait until the night to arrive. Tuesday starts dead calm and stays that way until mid to late afternoon. Westerlies build to 14-17 from Stevenson to Hood River by 5pm and rise to gusty 20-23 from Stevenson to Doug’s for the executive session. There remains wiggle room both ways in this forecast – the wind could be stronger, and it could be lighter. It all depends on when the big picture starts to shift. High temp: 106F. Too hot.

Cooler, but not cool, temps are forecast for areas west of the Cascade Crest on Wednesday, and offshore high pressure will be stronger. This sets us up for a big day. Without a marine layer on the west side, the wind is likely to under-perform. That said, we should see dawn patrol at 25=28 from Viento to Mosier with 13-16 east to Arlington. The wind builds to 28-31 from Mosier to Rufus and holds for the rest of the day. Arlington joins mid to late afternoon at 28-31, and Threemile/Boardman join at 23-26 in the evening. Near Swell and Hood River, the wind is likely to drop late morning to gusty 20-25 and rise late in the day to 24-27. High temps will be 93 for Hood River and 101 for Arlington.

Extended: Models keep the westerlies coming through the weekend. There’s some variation in daily strength, but we should see 20mph or more each day. With lingering heat in the picture, areas west of The Dalles will be the focus for the strongest wind.

Post, Whoopdee, Hospital Hill, Syncline, Columbia Hills, and Nestor are open. Eightmile, Knebal, Bottle Prairie, Surveyor’s, Dog River, SuperConnector, and Cook Meadows are open. Fifteenmile is clear of snow but has not been cleared of downed trees. Lewis River is open. I received an email that Falls Creek is open. That is USFS land, and E-bikes are not allowed. Cows are out on Hospital Hill. NO DOGS. That means you, all of you, even your dog that’s [insert adjective]. No dogs. Do not risk access for everyone. No parking at the corral.
