Gorge Wind Forecast

Hi friends! Today’s the least windy one of the next six, but that doesn’t mean it’ll be calm. We’ll have moderate westerlies today, gustier wind over the weekend thanks to systems moving around and about, and then we’ll have stronger wind early next week thanks to very strong offshore high pressure. Looking towards next weekend, model agreement falls apart. We’ll talk more about that in a bit. Before I forget, happy Canada Day holiday weekend! About the broken Hood River Bridge: next update comes from the Port of Hood River around 9am. We’ll get to hear what the inspecting engineer thought of yesterday’s unanticipated remodel.

For today, pressures started at 30.05/29.99/29.98 for gradients of 0.06 and 0.01. Between Viento and Hood River, the wind was in the 17-20 range. It was less than 10mph everywhere else. We’ll see the wind dip to 14-17 midday and spread from Stevenson to Hood River. In the evening, thanks to a slightly increased thermal gradient, westerlies pick up to 17-20 from Stevenson to Mosier. To the east today, the wind stays below 10mph. River flow over the last 24 hours was 131-178kcfs, river temp is 63.68F, and high temp forecast is 81F.

Saturday sees a system approaching from the offshore waters. You’ll know this is happening thanks to high clouds aloft and a pretty sunrise. Impact on the wind: generally speaking, this setup gives us a few hours at the Hatch followed by stronger, longer-lasting wind from Mosier to Rufus. Indeed… the day starts with 20-23 from Stevenson to Mosier and 13-16 from Lyle to Avery. After a few hours of that, the Stevenson-Hood River stretch falls to 17-20 while Mosier to Avery rises to 23-26. Thanks to thermal support, the wind climbs to 26-29 from Mosier to Rufus in the afternoon. Arlington joins in the evening. Swell and Hood River fall to 14-17 in the afternoon. High temp: 80F with high clouds in the morning and clear sky in the afternoon. Also, Northwave has a big sale Saturday and Sunday – clearing out the old and bringing in the new!

If there weren’t a weak low offshore on Sunday, the setup would be much closer to ideal. But it’ll be good enough! We’ll have gusty 14-17 under clouds sky west of Lyle or The Dalles. To the east: 18-22 to start. The wind takes its time, but it eventually rises to 26-29 from Lyle to Arlington with gusty 20-23 west of Lyle. High temp: 78F

Extended: starting Monday, we’ll have strong to very strong high pressure. This usually results in strong to very strong, long lasting, west wind. That lasts through Wednesday. After that, models generally hint at a warming trend, but they don’t agree on where the hottest weather will settle in. Without knowing that key piece of information, we can’t forecast wind for the July 4th holiday weekend. So, we’ll watch it for a day or two and see.
