Gorge Wind Forecast

Hi friends! Models keep the west wind going all the way through next weekend. If you just groaned because you need a rest day, know that you can take one even on a windy day! We’ll be focused on the western Gorge and Corridor today, tomorrow, and Friday. You’ll have a chance to get out in the eastern Gorge on Wednesday and Thursday.

Monday kicks off with pressures of 30.09/30.03/30.02 for gradients of 0.06 and 0.01. Wind was in the 13-16 range from Stevenson to Mosier to start with 19-22 at Viento and 5-10 everywhere else. Stay west for the best results today. With the metro area starting out clear, we’re likely to see a midday lull. 17-20 this morning from Viento to Mosier seems fair after a 13-16 start at Swell. The wind dips to 14-17 midday and holds through late afternoon. Models suggest the Executive Session (after 5pm) will rise to 19-22 from Stevenson to Mosier with 16-19 or a touch more from Lyle to Doug’s. Areas east of Doug’s will remain less than 10mph today. River flow over the last 24 hours was 111-161kcfs, river temp is 62.06F, and high temp forecast is 80F under clear sky.

Tuesday sees a ridge of warmer air build in from the south, but it’ll focus east of the Cascades. Best shot for best wind: early and late. A brief dawn patrol at 17-20 from Viento to Hood River fades by 9am to 12-15 from Stevenson to Mosier. Late afternoon wind, thanks to a heat low in Central Oregon, kicks the wind up to 16-19 from Stevenson to Doug’s. To the east: less than 10mph. 20-23 is possible in the evening from Stevenson to Doug’s, but it’ll probably just be focused from Lyle to Doug’s. It’s more likely that Stevenson to Mosier will hold at 16-19. High temp: 90F.

A system approaches from the offshore waters on Wednesday. This keeps the west side cool and allows the desert heat to do its thing. With offshore high pressure not all that strong, it probably won’t be a nuking day. But it’ll be a windy one! Dawn Patrol: 26-29 from Viento to Mosier with 23-26 east to Arlington. The wind quickly shifts away from the Hatch (where it’ll be gusty 22-26ish) and focuses from Mosier to Threemile: 28-31+. With dynamic processes in play, this forecast is likely to change some. But it’ll be windy, probably windiest in the Rowena-Doug’s section. High temp: 75F for Hood River and 82F for Arlington.

Extended: Thursday looks like a breezy eastern Gorge day; models currently have it at 25-28. Friday: 18-23 in the Corridor. Saturday: similar to Friday. Next Sunday: probably windier as another cooldown takes shape. Have fun on the river today!
