Gorge Wind Forecast
Hi friends! You made it through the no-wind days! By this afternoon, we’ll be back to westerlies, and we’ll hold on to them for a while. Both Saturday and Sunday look like big days here in the Gorge. Westerlies back off to the low 20s Monday and Tuesday, but they should bump up again for the middle of next week. Beyond that, models start to offer up a wider array of outcomes, so we’ll leave it there for now.

Friday starts almost-dead calm (actually, it’s dead calm now!), but the afternoon will resuscitate the wind. We’ll see a slow build starting late morning. Max wind will be in the evening. Westerlies build to 16-19 from Stevenson to Doug’s after 5pm. While there may be a short period of 16-19 at Swell, it’ll probably drop quickly back to 13-16 as an offshore system adds its opinion to the mix. River flow over the last 24 hours was 119-209kcfs, river temp is 62.42F, and high temp forecast is a near-blistering 91F. Where’s my shorty wetsuit, dude?
More wind is in the cards on Saturday. Thanks to the influence of a shortwave, the focus of the strongest wind for most of the day will be between Mosier and Rufus. Expect gusty conditions along the Rufus stretch. The day starts with 18-21 from Stevenson to Swell, maybe to Hood River or Mosier, with 10-13 east to Arlington. By late morning, westerlies rise to 21-24 from Stevenson to Avery. The strongest wind probably won’t last long at the Hatch – it’ll drop to 17-20 after an hour or two of stronger wind. Rufus starts to climb late morning. Early to mid afternoon sees the wind rise to 25-28 from Mosier to Arlington with 20-23 at Stevenson and Viento and 17-20 at Swell and Hood River. High temp: 87F with partly high overcast sky in the morning and clear sky in the afternoon. Hot. You’ll be happy to be in the water!

Sunday. Ah, this is the one I’ve got my eyes on! That previously mentioned shortwave drags a beast of a marine layer in to the west side. Clouds will probably make it past Hood River in the morning. If the forecast from this morning holds, those clouds won’t break up until the afternoon. Dawn Patrol kicks off with 25-28+ from Viento to Mosier with 22-25 from Mosier east to Arlington and beyond. Afternoon: 30-33 from Mosier to Boardman. Areas to the west will depend on when/if the marine clouds burn off. There will almost certainly be periods of strong, very gusty wind at Swell. That’s great for SUP foil, but not great for much else. If you require steadier wind (and Indian food at Amayah’s), you’ll be heading east for the best results.
Extended: Generally speaking, models suggest upper teens to low 20s Monday and Tuesday and a stronger day on Wednesday. There will be a fair bit of action offshore for this time of year. This results in a fair bit of uncertainty. Generally speaking, westerlies should stick around. It’s strength, quality, and location that are in question next week. Have a great day today. Stay cool!

There’s a weekly social for Wind Johnnies (The Gorge Wind Social) at Ferment Brewing every 3rd Monday this summer. On June 25th, Brave Endeavors hosts a pride MTB ride at Post Canyon at 5:30pm. June 30th is Vortex #3, a paddling race.
The Columbia Gorge Junior Kayak Club offers free roll sessions (gear provided) for kids at the Hood River Pool every other Tuesday from 5:30 to 7pm. Post, Whoopdee, Hospital Hill, Syncline, Columbia Hills, and Nestor are open. Eightmile, Knebal, Bottle Prairie, Surveyor’s, Dog River, Sueprconnector, and Cook Meadows are open. Fifteenmile is clear of snow but has not been cleared of downed trees. Lewis River is open. I received an email that Falls Creek is open. That is USFS land, and E-bikes are not allowed. Cows are out on Hospital Hill. NO DOGS. That means you, all of you, even your dog that’s [insert adjective]. No dogs. Do not risk access for everyone. No parking at the corral.
