Gorge Wind Forecast

Hi friends! It’s Saturday, and a rather showery day is forecast for the west side. Head east for stronger wind and sunshine. As of yesterday, we had a rest day planned for tomorrow. Sorry, but no rest day for you after all! Monday looks like a windier day as heat returns to the desert and cool air lingers on the west side. After that, we enter a warming trend with uncertainty about the wind – we’ll talk more about that in a bit.

For Saturday, we have an active weather day: a shortwave swings through in the morning bringing waves of rain, and a surface front makes its way inland in the afternoon. A low moves into BC. Instability will be present all the way from the west side to the Idaho border today; we cannot rule out random showers and thunderstorms. This bodes poorly for wind quality, but does set us up for quantity. West of Mosier, there will be intermittent drizzle today. Westerlies will be in the 8-11 range in the morning (17-20 at Viento, which benefits from active weather) and 14-17 from Viento to Mosier in the afternoon. The east steals the show today. Expect 14-17 to start from Mosier to Doug’s with 25-28 from Maryhill to Arlington. Afternoon wind rises to gusty 28-31 from Avery to Boardman. The Lyle-Rowena section is questionable. If the clouds burn back enough, it’ll work, but it’s unclear if they will. After 5pm, the wind drops to 23-26 from Lyle eastward. River flow over the last 24 hours was 175-268kcfs (197-268 at Rufus), river temp is 61.88F, and high temp forecast is 62F for Hood River and 72F for Pasco. Heading east? Don’t forget to stop at Amayah’s in Biggs and pick up some Indian food!

Sunday starts calm west of The Dalles with 10-13 to the east. The wind slowly, every so slowly builds. By mid-afternoon, it reaches 18-22 from Stevenson to Avery. If the eastern Gorge heats as planned, we could see a late session of 23-26 from Stevenson to Avery. High temp: 65F for Hood River. Monday sees high pressure return to the offshore waters while heat returns to the desert. As of this morning, models predict dawn patrol at 20-23 from Stevenson to Rufus. Those same models hold the western Gorge at 20-23 all day and take the Lyle to Arlington stretch to 28-31 (maybe more?) in the afternoon.

Extended: warmer weather returns starting Tuesday. It’s not yet clear where the hottest weather will set up, which means it’s not clear yet whether we’ll have a break in the wind or for how long we’ll have a break. There are indications that the heat wave will start to fall apart Sunday. That would almost certainly result in a big day. But that’s way, way too far out to pin anything down. We’ll keep watching it. In the meantime, have fun on the river today!

Wind direction N (coast/Sauvie Island) and W (Jones) unless otherwise noted. Saturday: W10-15/LTW/N20, W swell 6′ at 9 seconds and SW 2′ at 14 seconds. Sunday: 10-15/10-15/20-25, W 5′ @ 9. Light to moderate westerlies. 99% chance of rainbows. Sunday will have low clouds to start. It ends partly high overcast. Temps start in the mid 40s and rise to the low 60s. Light wind early. Moderate to moderately strong westerlies late in the day. No rainbows. Monday will be partly cloudy. Temps start in the upper 40s and rise to the mid 60s. Moderate to strong westerlies. No rainbows.

There’s a weekly social for Wind Johnnies (The Gorge Wind Social) at Ferment Brewing every 3rd Monday this summer. On June 25th, Brave Endeavors hosts a pride MTB ride at Post Canyon at 5:30pm. June 30th is Vortex #3, a paddling race.

The Columbia Gorge Junior Kayak Club offers free roll sessions (gear provided) for kids at the Hood River Pool every other Tuesday from 5:30 to 7pm. NK Studio’s by-donation Tuesday morning yoga class is back. Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. There’s meditation with monks at 5:15pm (an hour) and 6:30pm (30 minutes plus a talk) at Yoga Samadhi in White Salmon.

Post, Whoopdee, Hospital Hill, Syncline, Columbia Hills, and Nestor are open. Eightmile, Knebal, Bottle Prairie, Surveyor’s, Dog River, Sueprconnector, and Cook Meadows are open. Fifteenmile is clear of snow but has not been cleared of downed trees. Lewis River is open. Lower Falls Creek is open, but the area above Horse Camp is not. Cows are out on Hospital Hill. NO DOGS. That means you, all of you, even your dog that’s [insert adjective]. No dogs. Do not risk access for everyone. No parking at the corral.
