Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

Good morning skiers and riders! Spring skiing continues through Saturday morning. A bit of precip (probably snain then snow) arrives Saturday afternoon into Sunday daytime. After that, models have lots of ideas about what the weather should do. Generally speaking, it’ll probably be dry for the first half of next week. After that, it’s anyone’s guess.

Thursday looks like classic spring skiing: hard and fast to start and corn snow later. The free air freezing level (above the lowland cold pools) will be 4000′ in the morning, 5000′ in the afternoon, and 4000′ overnight. Wind will be E 20 in the morning, E 15 in the afternoon, and E 25 overnight. Friday will be sunny and clear. The free air freezing level will be 4000′ in the morning, 5000′ in the afternoon, and 9000′ overnight. Wind: E 25 in the morning, E 15 in the afternoon, and variable to 15 overnight.

A cold front, a weak one, arrives on Saturday afternoon. The day starts clear with the freezing level at 9000′. Clouds move in and start dropping snain or light rain around 2pm. By 5pm, the snow level drops to 5000′, and the precip switches to snow. Overnight, the snow level drops to 1500-2000′. A trace of precip, 0.05” or so, is forecast prior to 5pm Saturday. About 0.1” water equivalent (WE) falls overnight for an inch or so of new snow. Wind: variable to 15 early, SW 20-35 in the afternoon, and WNW 35 after midnight. Light snowfall, up to an inch, is forecast Sunday with the snow level maxing out around 2500′. After that, it’s really anyone’s guess. Probably dry for a few days, but it’s not clear if it’ll be cool or warmer. Models then get more optimistic about precipitation towards the latter half of next week, but that’s subject to change. Way too far out to be predicting. Have fun in the corn snow!

Gorge Wind Forecast

Moderate easterlies are in the cards Thursday, Friday, and early Saturday. A weather system Saturday afternoon will cause some brief gusty moderate westerlies prior to a round of drizzle moving in. After Saturday, model agreement falls apart (some say ridging, some say troughing) which means we really can’t speculate about the wind beyond then. In the meantime…

Thursday starts with easterlies at 25ish at Iwash (Rooster) and 15-20 at Stevenson and Viento. The wind starts to fade quickly. By late morning, Iwash will be down to 20-25 and Stevenson/Viento 15. In the afternoon, Iwash drops to 15, Stevenson drops to 10, and the stretch from Viento to Arlington picks up to E 5-15. River flow Wednesday was 141-224kcfs, river temp is 50.90F, and high temp forecast is 66F.

Friday starts with 30 at Iwash and 20 at Stevenson. By noon, the wind drops to 20-25 at Iwash and 15-20 at Stevenson. Afternoon: 15-20 at Iwash, 15 at Stevenson, and 10-15 from Viento to Arlington. High temp: 67F. Saturday starts with easterlies at 20mph or so. Iwash turns calm by 11am, and Stevenson holds at 20. By early afternoon, Stevenson to Mosier picks up to gusty 17-20 out of the west. The wind lasts and hour or two and then shifts east between Avery and Rufus. While the 12k model suggest a brief shot of 25-29, I’d be surprised if this materializes. Models do hint at westerlies in the mid 20’s east of The Dalles on Sunday, but let’s hold off on a solid forecast until there’s more consensus. Have a great day out there in the sun!

Cycling

Cows are out on Hospital Hill. NO DOGS. That means you, all of you, even your dog that’s [insert adjective]. No dogs. Do not risk access for everyone. No parking at the corral. HRATS have a fundraiser on 4/20. Raffle tickets are on sale now. Buy some and support your trails organization. Definitely got a Tack Alert going on out there right now – lots of good dirt. Some areas of Post are still muddy (shady, cool areas), so consider choosing a different spot to ride. You’ll have Post all summer long! Sisterwives and Kleeway in Post Canyon are currently closed for rebuilding. It’s trail-building season. Get on the HRATS mailing list if you’d like to help out. If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
