Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

It snowed all day Saturday on Mt. Hood. Timberline and Skibowl got hammered by wind, low temps, and electrical issues and had to close early. Fingers crossed for Sunday. After 8” of new powder on Mt. Hood during the day on Saturday (6” in Hood River), we’ll pick up 4-6” additional by Sunday morning. The snow should be done by then. We’ll have a couple of sunny, or mostly sunny days followed by a (probably) warmer system late Tuesday into Wednesday. More on that in a bit.

For Sunday, expect a warmer day than Saturday! The snow level will still be at 0′, as will the free air freezing level. The sky will be partly cloudy to mostly clear with increasing high clouds in the afternoon or evening. Temps should warm up into the low 20’s before falling back to the low double digits overnight. Wind: NNW 25 -35 all day fading to NW 20-25 overnight. Sunday is the Teacup Tea Party with snacks, tea, and free lessons.

Monday will be partially high overcast and dry. The free air freezing level will be 0′ all day with temps in the teens or so. Wind: NW 20-30 in the morning, NW 10-15 in the afternoon, and W 15 overnight. Lower elevations will see strong east wind. Tuesday starts clear and turns cloudy. Precip moves in overnight. The track of this system is really up in the air, and that’s going to determine what kind of precip we get. Models are about 75% in that we’ll get a lot of some sort of precip Tuesday night through Wednesday, and they’re pretty certain it’ll be a mix of types, but we’ll have to wait for more clarity. Let’s leave it there for now. Enjoy the powder!

Stevenson: 40 falling to 30. Hood River: 10ish. High temp: mid teens. Water temp: 41F. River flow on Saturday was 75-154kcfs. Monday will be 60 at Iwash and 40-45 at Stevenson all day. High temp: mid to upper teens. Tuesday starts with 60-70 at Iwash and 40 at Stevenson. Afternoon wind drops to 45 at Iwash and 30 at Stevenson. Models are all over the place on Wednesday, so let’s leave it for now.

Cycling

Regarding the trails in general: don’t ride in the mud. You’ll damage the trails. Don’t ride trails if it was below freezing the previous night and is above freezing when you want to ride. Ride gravel. Ride your trainer. Build trails. There are trail builders seeking extra hands on seven additional miles of trail on Whoopdee. Contact HRATS for more information. If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
