Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

Good morning skiers and snowboarders and Nordic gliders, and happy New Year’s Eve. Let’s leave behind this dismal start to the ski season and look forward to piles of snow for 2024. And yes, that’s what the extended forecast contains! Two-week percentiles are… 25th: 27”. 50th: 37”. 90th: 70”. That all starts next Friday. Between now and then, the snow/freezing level will hover right around 5000′ to 5500′. Very little precip is forecast between now and the big switcheroo.

Sunday should be a sunny one on the slopes, although models do drag some high clouds in later. The free air freezing level will be 2500′ in the morning, 3500′ in the afternoon, and 4000′ after midnight. No precip. Wind will be W 10-15 or SW 10-15 all day and all night. Monday looks similar – thin high clouds and filtered sun. The free air freezing level rises from 4000′ in the morning to 5000′ in the afternoon and 6000′ after midnight. Light SW wind.

Tuesday will be partly high overcast during the day with a chance of a little wet snow or light mixed precip overnight – models don’t have a clear picture of the precip total, but it won’t be much. The free air freezing level will be 6000′ in the morning, 5500′ in the evening, and 5000′ overnight. At this point, just a trace of precip is forecast, and that won’t start until midnight. In other words, expect a dry day on the slopes. Wind will be SSW 5-15 all day with lighter wind overnight. A few lingering flurries may persist on Wednesday. Thursday looks sunny.

Snow arrives sometime Friday. Models are currently calling for anywhere from 0.5” water equivalent to 1.5” water equivalent from this system. That’s 5-18” of new snow. After Friday, models keep the temps down and the precipitation up. In other words, things are looking great starting next weekend into the extended forecast. Hooray. Bring it on!

Gorge Wind Forecast

Hi friends! The Covid-driven downfall of SUP foilers continues. At least five of us have contracted The Evil in the last couple of weeks. Hopefully we’re all back on the water shredding together soon. But not today. Nope. There’s not going to be enough wind for Sunday funday. Early pressures read 30.15 in Portland, The Dalles, and Pasco for exactly zero gradient through the Gorge. Wind was light and variable. It’ll pick up to E 15 at Stevenson this afternoon with E 10 at Iwash (Rooster) Rock. River flow yesterday was 98-135kcfs, river temp is 45F, and high temp forecast is 46F under Nothing near Hood River and partly high overcast sky elsewhere.

Monday starts with 20-25 at Stevenson and 30-35 at Iwash. Stevenson may pick up to 25-30 mid-morning before dropping to 20-25 in the afternoon. Iwash holds all day. High temp: 44F under a big Nothing cloud that may break west of Stevenson. Tuesday starts with 45 at Iwash and 30 at Stevenson. Stevenson holds, and Rooster drops to 40 in the afternoon. High temp: 41F under high clouds. We still have a chance of west wind on Friday, but the strength has been backing off. Keep your fingers crossed, okay? It sure would be fun to have a Swell or Rufus day!

Regarding the trails in general: don’t ride in the mud. You’ll damage the trails. Don’t ride trails if it was below freezing the previous night and is above freezing when you want to ride. Ride gravel. Ride your trainer. Build trails. There are trail builders seeking extra hands on seven additional miles of trail on Whoopdee. Contact HRATS for more information. If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
