Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

Hello shredders! Sorry for the lack of forecast yesterday. Covid took me out. Seems like I have enough energy to sit up for a couple hours and write today, so let’s do this! Quickcast says… a little bit of snow for the mountain today followed by warmer weather next week. Around the 28th, our two main models diverge; the GFS looks colder, perhaps just cold enough, and the ECWMF runs warmer, too warm. So, no clear consensus beyond then, other than hopeful thinking for the GFS.

Today, Friday, brings a quick cold front to the mountain. It’s a bit warm up there for the first of the incoming precip to fall as sticking snow (it could be wet, melty snain at first), but the temps will drop quickly. Orographics will help squeeze a few inches out of this. The snow level will be 6500′ early, 2500′ by mid-morning, and down to 1000-1500′ overnight. During the day, we’ll see 0.2 to 0.3” water equivalent (WE) as mixed precip followed by 0.2” WE of snow. Call it 1” wet snow followed by 2-3” dry snow. Overnight, just a trace falls in the drier post-frontal air. Wind: SW 15-30 early turns to W 40 mid-morning, NW 35-45 this afternoon, and NW 10-20 overnight.

Saturday looks clear and sunny. The free air freezing level (FAF) will be 1000′ or less all day long and will fall to 0′ overnight with temps at 5000′ right at freezing. Wind: NW 10-20 early fades to light/variable in the afternoon and becomes S 5-15 overnight. Sunday starts with high clouds. Those increase overnight and might drop a trace of snow. The freezing level will be 0′ all day with temps hovering right near freezing all the way up to 6500′. Overnight, the snow level stabilizes at 4000′. Wind: S 5-15 in the morning becoming SW 15-25 in the afternoon and holding through the night.

Warmer, wetter weather is forecast for the first few days of next week. It’s unclear exactly how warm and how wet, but we can say “too warm”. When it’s “too warm”, it’s always “too wet”. We’ll keep an eye on this and see how it unfolds. Snow dances, please!

Gorge Wind Forecast

Hi Friends! A nice west wind day is on tap for folks who did not participate in the SUP foil super spreader Covid event last week. After today, we’ll be back to easterlies for the extended period. There will be enough east wind to keep you from forgetting any of your skills.

Friday kicks off with E 15 from Iwash (Rooster) to Stevenson. That won’t last long. As soon as an incoming cold front hits, we’ll see westerlies return. Wait for the heaviest rain to stop before making your move. We’ll have gusty 21-24 from Stevenson to Avery (less near Rowena, probably) for a couple hours this morning before the real fun begins. Gusty 24-27 chance of 26-29 from Avery to Arlington with gusty, sprinkly 20-23 from Stevenson to Doug’s. River flow yesterday was 99-126kcfs, river temp is 46.5F, high temp forecast is 45F (with sun!), and Covid count is now 3 from the SFSS.

Saturday starts calm. Easterlies build to 25mph from Iwash to Stevenson in the afternoon. High temp: 39F under clear sky. Sun!!! Sunday starts with E 30 at Stevenson and E 40 at Iwash. Midday wind falls to 30-35 at Iwash and 25 at Stevenson. Afternoon: 20-25. High temp: 37F under high clouds in the west and sun in the east. Easterlies continue on and off with plenty of strong-enough days through next week.

Ride gravel. Ride your trainer. Build trails. There are trail builders seeking extra hands on seven additional miles of trail on Whoopdee. Contact HRATS for more information.
