Gorge Wind Forecast

Good morning, friends! Easterlies today and Saturday give way to (probably) strong westerlies on Sunday. Yay. For Friday, you’ll find 40ish at Iwash (Rooster) all day with Stevenson rising to 25-30 and Viento 15-20. The wind will drop off a little in the afternoon, perhaps 5-10mph, but there should be plenty of wind for you to do your thing today. Bonus: sunshine in the windy zones while the central Gorge stays stuck under the inversion cloud. River flow yesterday was 92-147kcfs, river temp is 53F, and high temp forecast is 49F.

Saturday starts with 25-30 at Stevenson and 40 at Iwash. Less at Viento, of course. More importantly, it’s the Big Winds Local’s Only Sale. Afternoon wind holds at 25-30 at Stevenson and drops to 30-35 at Iwash. Overnight, the wind drops further, and after midnight, it turns westerly. High temp: 48F under partly cloudy sky.

Sunday: models and ensembles are still all over the place. As of yesterday, they had us all running ot the eastern Gorge. As of this morning, they’re offering up a nuker at the Hatch followed by 30ish out east. At least models are converging on “windy” – there was a day or two there where they weren’t. High temp: 49F under partly cloudy sky in the west and sunny weather out east. Easterlies come roaring back Monday afternoon and stick around for Tuesday. Have a great day today!

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast – intermittent forecasts until ski season

Mostly dry weather is forecast for the next week. Exception: A snowstorm arrives Saturday afternoon into Sunday and brings up to a foot of new snow for Timberline and Meadows base areas. After that: warm and dry weather for a couple days followed by the potential for a little more snow Wednesday into Thursday.

Friday kicks off clear on the slopes and stays that way today. Nice day for hiking, for sure. Clouds move in tonight. The free air freezing level (FAF) will be 9500′ this morning and will fall to 8500′ by this afternoon. Wind: SW 5-15 all day and all night.

Saturday starts partly cloudy. Light drizzle could start up as early as mid-morning, but it also may hold off until the afternoon. Precip intensifies in the evening as a cold front plows into Mt. Hood. The snow level drops from 8500′ early to 7000′ in the afternoon to 6000′ in the evening to 3500-4000′ after 10pm. Just a trace of rain falls before 4pm. In the transition period between rain and snow, up to 0.6” water equivalent (WE) is expected. That could result in an inch or two of wet snow at 5000′. Overnight, models have us at 0.7” WE for 6-8” new snow of what we like to call “base building quality”. Given the wind, orographics could help the snow exceed those totals. Also given the wind, the snow will settle on leeward slopes. Wind: S 10-20 in the morning builds to SW 20-35 in the evening and turns to W 40 overnight.

Strong wind persists on Sunday and gives us a shot at picking up more snow than models expect. Moisture will be limited at this point, but… orographics will be present. The snow level will be 4000′ early and 2500-3000′ through the evening. Warmer air starts to filter in overnight for a free air freezing level of 6000′ under clear sky. It’s a little unclear how much snow will fall during the day; models suggest just a trace, but this setup can overperform. Call it a trace to several inches. Wind: W35-40 early turns to NW 45-50 by sunrise and holds through the afternoon. Overnight, the wind turns northerly or north easterly. Monday and Tuesday look dry and warmer with the FAF rising over 10,000′ by Monday afternoon. Widespread light precip is currently forecast for Wednesday into Thursday. This starts as rain and transitions to snow. Details are not yet clear. Cross your fingers for this Saturday-Sunday system. Enough for an XC ski or a romp in the snow would be awesome!
