Gorge Wind Forecast

Good morning, friends! East wind sticks around for a few more days, takes a short break, and returns next week. There’s still a chance of west wind on Sunday, but the timing looks off – overnight – and the strength of the possible wind is dropping. But I’m still holding out hope because I want to paddle!

Wednesday starts with easterlies at 25ish near Iwash, 15 at Viento, and 5-10 at Stevenson. Before you can make it there, the wind will probably go calm. Afternoon sees a switch to light westerlies, perhaps 5-10mph from Stevenson to Doug’s. River flow yesterday was 80-130kcfs, river temp is 53F, and high temp forecast is 53F. We are rapidly approaching the 50+50=100 barrier, aren’t we?

Thursday starts with E 25ish from Iwash (Rooster) to Stevenson. The wind climbs to 30-35 for a few hours and then drops to 20-25 around 1pm. The wind falls to 15-20 in the late afternoon. Viento, of course, will be lighter. High temp: 49F under sunny sky. Friday looks like a solid east wind day. Iwash holds at 35-40 all day, Stevenson holds at 30ish, and Viento should hold at 20ish. High temp: 47F under sunny sky. Easterlies at 25mph near Iwash Saturday morning quickly turn calm.

Our cold front, the system we’ve been watching all week, is slated for late Saturday night. Early Sunday or midday Sunday would have been better. Ensembles are still holding out hope, but the operational GFS doesn’t look good – the best of the wind happens before sunrise. Let’s keep watching. Things could still change!

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast – intermittent forecasts until ski season

Still not much snow forecast for Mt. Hood. Still no clear sign of when the pattern will turn snowy. At least the dirt in the lowlands is perfect for mountain biking right now, and at least we’ll have plenty of sunshine over the next week or so!

Wednesday adds a little rain to what little snowpack there is. The snow level will be 6500′ all day and will fall to 5500′ overnight. Just a tenth of an inch of rain or so is forecast. Wind: SW 20 this morning turns to W 20 this afternoon and fades to W 10 overnight.

Thursday will be sunny on the slopes (and the hiking trails, which are still accessible for the most part). The free air freezing level (FAF) will be 5500′ in the morning, 11,000′ in the afternoon, and 10,500′ overnight. Wind: W 10 in the morning, WSW 15-20 in the afternoon and SW 5-10 after midnight. Friday looks similar: sunny, warm (850mb – 5000′ – temps in the 40’s) with light wind. A bit of rain is forecast on Saturday into Sunday. Next week sees high pressure rebuild over the region. That keeps us dry and sunny for at least a few days.

Model spread increases next week. Around the 23rd, one model takes us colder, and the other keeps us a little too warm. But that’s way to far out to be putting credence in the forecasts. Ensembles are all over the place too. It’ll snow eventually, right? Get out and enjoy the trails and the fall colors in the meantime.
