Gorge Wind Forecast

Good morning, friends! I’m still sore from that ridiculous paddle session on Saturday. Next chance: models are honing in on Sunday. Cross your fingers that the timing shifts a little from what they’re predicting right now. About 4 hours later would be ideal. Between now and next Sunday, we have a few days of easterlies and a couple days of calm-ish wind.

Monday starts with pressures of 29.96/29.93/29.91 for west gradients of 0.03 and 0.02. We’ll have very light west wind all day. The high-res model likes the idea of 15mph near Rowena this afternoon, so don’t be surprised, but also don’t count on it. River flow yesterday was 95-122kcfs, river temp is 54F, and high temp forecast is 54F.

Tuesday brings back the easterlies. Max wind will be 25-30 near Iwash (Rooster) Rock and 20-25 near Stevenson. After 1pm or so, the wind drops to 15mph. High temp: 52F under mostly sunny sky. Wednesday’s forecast is calm. Models are arguing over whether it will rain or not. Probably. Thursday and Friday bring easterlies at 30mph or so. It’s likely we’ll see easterlies on Saturday as well, at least in the morning.

A powerful cold front is forecast to move through early on Sunday. Despite the long lead time, most members of the ensembles are on board with this. The setup looks similar to last Saturday, but the timing is a bit earlier than ideal. Fortunately, there’s plenty of time for the timing to change! After Sunday, models are all over the place. So, we’ll have to wait and see how things sort out.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast – intermittent forecasts until ski season

Not much happens on the slopes for the next week, so I’ll probably do some intermittent forecasting. Starting the 21st or so, the weather (probably) turns colder. Snow starts to accumulate. Until then… After a few flurries this morning (it’s Monday), the weather turns clear on the mountain. The free air freezing level will be 3000′ this morning, 4500′ this afternoon, and somewhere around 5500′ overnight. Less than an inch of snow accumulates this morning. Wind: W 15 dropping to WSW 10 this afternoon and variable to 5 overnight.

Tuesday will be high overcast then clear. The free air freezing level will be 5500′ early, 6500′ in the afternoon, and 6000′ after midnight. Wind starts light/variable and turns to WSW 10 in the afternoon. Models don’t agree on the path of incoming precipitation on Wednesday. Nor do they agree on the amount. Or timing. Anyway, the snow level will be 6000-6500′, so whatever comes will be in the form of rain, or at best, mixed precip. Given the setup, the wind should be 20mph or less.

Dry, sunny, warmer weather returns Thursday and Friday. The freezing level rises to 9000-10,000′. High clouds Saturday give way to a big cold front Saturday night into Sunday. After that, there’s a lack of agreement in the models, so we’ll leave it there for now. Generally speaking, the weather is likely to turn cooler after next weekend. Have a great week!

Hood River Weather Forecast

High clouds stick around today after morning sprinkles. Temps will be in the low 40’s early and mid 50’s later. Light and variable or light west wind. 19% chance of early rainbows. Tuesday will be mostly clear, then clear, then partially high overcast. Temps start in the mid 30’s and rise to the low 50’s. Easterlies. No rainbows. Wednesday will probably be drizzly. Temps start in the upper 30’s and rise to the low 50’s. Partly cloudy. Calm or light west wind. 50/50 chance of rainbows.
