Gorge Wind Forecast

Good morning, friends! Wow. Yesterday was ridiculous. Models kept the wind west of the Hatch, as they often do on frontal systems, but reality didn’t like that idea at all! The Hatch went off! Spray from one side of the river to the other. Viento reported a gust to 69. Swell seemed to be reporting a bit low, only reading 50 in the gusts. I assure you it was stronger. On the river, it was washing machine chaos with big chunks of disorganized swell rolling through. Team winning, once again, was the SUP-foilers. More of them than any other sport, and bigger smiles. But then, as we’ve discussed before, I’m a little biased.

Much more reasonable wind is forecast this week. Almost all of that will be easterlies, although there will be some dead calm days mixed in for you dock starting people and sculling folks. Next chance of big westerlies arrives next Sunday through Tuesday. Models are actually giving some pretty clear signs of west wind in that time period, so do keep watching the forecast.

For Sunday, today, we’ll have easterlies. Iwash (Rooster) Rock starts at 30-35, fades to 15-20 midday, and drops to 15 this afternoon. Stevenson: 20-25 rising to 25-30 and fading to 20-25. Viento: a bit less, as per usual. River flow yesterday was 91-119kcfs, river temp is 55F, and high temp forecast is 53F.

Monday starts calm and stays that way in most locations. Between Stevenson and Viento, westerlies pick up to 7-10mph in the afternoon. High temp: 54F. Tuesday brings easterlies at 30-35 for Iwash and 25-30 at Stevenson. The wind holds in the 20-25 range into the late afternoon. High temp: 53F. Wednesday: probably calm. Thursday/Friday: probably easterlies.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast – intermittent forecasts until ski season

Not much is happening in the next week or so. Despite a lot of uncertainty beyond that, models are coalescing around colder, wetter weather starting around the 20th of this month or so. Between now and then… just some rather mixed precipitation, some dry days, and maybe even some sunshine. Forecasts will probably be intermittent between now and then because… well, because I can? Because they’re somewhat unnecessary?!

Sunday will be cloudy during the day. Light snow moves in tonight. The free air freezing level falls from 6500′ this morning to 5000′ this evening and 4500′ overnight. About 0.2” water equivalent (WE) is forecast overnight for 1-2” wet snow from 5000′ on up. Wind will be SSW 5-15 early. It builds to SW 20-40 this evening and turns to WSW 20 after midnight.

Monday starts with flurries, turns partly cloudy, and adds a few more flurries after midnight. The snow level will be 4500′ in the morning. It falls to 4000′ in the afternoon and 3500′ after midnight. Up to 0.1” WE is possible in the morning for up to an inch of new. Overnight: just a trace. Wind: WSW 20 in the morning turns to variable at 5-15 in the afternoon. Tuesday brings very light mixed precip with light southerly or SW wind. Wednesday: light rain with the snow level at 6500′. Thursday: sunny! That’s enough for now. Stay tuned for The Big Weather Switch (hopefully) in 8 days or so.
