Gorge Wind Forecast

Rufus met expectations yesterday with solid wind and decent swell. SUP foilers appeared to outnumber all other watersports enthusiasts. Maybe it’s because they are the most enthusiastic? Or maybe I’m a bit biased! Anyway, generally speaking, the weather pattern (minus today) looks quite active for the next couple of weeks. Low pressure system after low pressure system spins around off the coast. This could drive intermittent easterlies, but unless those systems decide to blast inland, we’re probably not going to see any west wind for a while. Okay, maybe briefly on Friday, but also maybe not.

Wednesday starts with light westerlies, but the wind will switch around to light easterly this afternoon. Light means 10mph or less. Overnight, the wind continues to build. River flow yesterday was 75-116kcfs, river temp is 56F, and high temp forecast is 54F. Thursday starts with E 30-35 at Iwash (Rooster) Rock and 20-25 at Stevenson. Viento: 15ish. The wind levels out at 20-25 from Iwash to Stevenson midday. Afternoon: Iwash drops to 15, and Stevenson holds. Rain arrives mid-afternoon. High temp: 48F. The wind switches to light westerly after midnight.

Friday starts with light west wind. Afternoon westerlies could pick up to 20-23 from The Dalles to Rufus for a few hours, but the ensembles are not on board with this. Let’s look again tomorrow. After that: too much spread in the models to make predictions. That’s kinda the deal this time of year – the weather is just too active to forecast accurately more than a day or two in advance.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast – intermittent forecasts until ski season

Timberline picked up 9” of new snow in the last couple of days. Less fell at lower elevations, which is sad, because I was hoping for another round of skate skiing! A few more inches of snow are forecast Thursday night. After that, we move into a warmer pattern through, if you trust the ensembles, at least the 19th or 20th of this month.

Wednesday will be clear and sunny with light wind. Ah, what a nice day to spend on a mountain! The free air freezing level will be 4500′ this morning, 6000′ this afternoon, and 7500′ after midnight. Wind will be NW 10-15 early, light SW in the afternoon, and SW 10-20 after midnight.

Thursday starts high overcast. Snow arrives around 4pm and continues overnight. The free air freezing level will be 7500′ in the morning with 850mb around +4C. By the time the precip arrives, the snow level will be 5000′. IT falls to 3500′ after midnight. About 0.4” water equivalent (WE) is forecast overnight for about 4” of new snow. Wind: SW 10-20 in the morning, SW 25-40 in the evening, and W 30-35 from late evening on through Friday morning.

Orographic (terrain-enhanced) snowfall continues for a few hours on Friday. A brief break midday is met by a possible return of light snowfall overnight. The snow level will be 3500′ duirng the day and will start to rise to 4000′ or higher overnight. A couple inches of snow falls in the morning. Just a trace is forecast overnight. Wind: W 30 in the morning, W 20 in the afternoon, and W 25 after midnight.

Models start to disagree on the timing and strength of system from late Friday onward, so that’s it for precise forecasting. Generally speaking, models suggest that 850mb (~5000′) temps will remain too warm for snowfall through the 19th or 20th. Let’s see how that prediction holds over time. Have a great day!
