Gorge Wind Forecast

Models continue to point at brief period of moderately strong westerlies (very gusty mid-20’s or a bit more) Monday and Tuesday afternoon. Ensembles are more optimistic about Tuesday than Monday. Focus your attention there for now. Saturday starts with pressures of 29.82/29.92/29.97 for easterly gradients of 0.10/0.08. The wind turns calm midday and then westerly. You’ll find gusty 14-17 between Lyle and Rufus this afternoon. River flow yesterday was 75-121 kcfs, river temp is 58F. High temp forecast 60F.

Sunday starts light westerly, turns to E 15 near Stevenson briefly, and returns to light westerly. High temp: 56F. Monday starts with E 15mph and quickly turns westerly as a weather system swings through. Models bring a few hours of gusty 22-27 between The Dalles and Arlington or Threemile in the afternoon. The deterministic GFS looks nearly identical for Tuesday, but more of the ensembles are on board. The probability of “enough” wind is higher. In both situations, you’ll want to drive pre-emptively, or you’re gong to miss most of the wind – it’s likely to only last 3-5 hours at most. Have fun out there!

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast – intermittent forecasts until ski season

Models are coming into agreement on at least a few days of snowy weather for the slopes. Maybe snowy enough to get you hiking for turns, and almost certainly snowy enough for you and your pup to do a little XC. This is a welcome change from previous forecasts that had temps too warm through the middle of the month. Yay. The next couple of days, tho, they look a bit too warm. Saturday, especially, will have hints of pineapple in the precipitation. The snow level starts at 10,000′, falls to 7000′ this evening, and briefly dips to 4000′ after midnight. About 0.6” rain falls during the day. A trace is forecast overnight. Wind: SW 30-35 this morning fades to 20-35 this afternoon and turns to W 20 after midnight.

Sunday morning looks dry, but another system arrives in the afternoon. This one will be cool enough for snow at the higher elevations of the resorts. The snow level starts at 4000′, quickly rises to 6000′, and mostly stays there through Monday morning. About 0.1” rain or mix precip is forecast Sunday afternoon. After 4pm, intensity increases. Expect 0.6-.8” water equivalent (WE) overnight for a couple inches of wet snow at 5500′ and up to 8” at the highest elevations. Wind will be W 20 early, S 20 in the afternoon, and SW 20-30 after midnight.

Temps drop Monday afternoon and snow starts to accumulate. In the morning, we’ll have mixed precip with a snow level of 6000′. That falls to 4500′ by the afternoon and 3500′ after midnight. About 0.5” WE falls during the day. This starts as mixed precip and transitions to snow. At 5000′, we’ll call that a couple inches. Overnight, another 0.8” WE is forecast for 6-8” new at 5000′. Wind: SW 20-30 early, WSW 30-40 in the afternoon, and W 45 overnight.

Those strong winds continue into Tuesday. This brings moderate to heavy snowfall and up to a foot of new. The snow level will be 3500′ early, 4000′ in the afternoon, and 2000′ after midnight. Fingers crossed this is enough for earn-your-turns (the wind will pile the snow up in leeward locations) at the resorts or groom at Teacup. Have a great weekend, everyone!

Contact HRATS for more information. See events section of this report for upcoming trail work parties on various trail systems. Don’t ride in the mud, or you’ll do permanent damage. Also, people will have to fix your messes rather than building you new trails. Just don’t, okay?No trails have closed yet due to snow, but we’re likely to lose the highest-elevation trails, at least temporarily, on the 25th . If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
