Gorge Wind Forecast

Good morning everyone! It’s way cold out there, cold enough to freeze the river to your paddle, your wing, your pole-board, your kite strings, and your pretty little face. Well, at least where the wind is calm. In the windy spots, temps are in the low 40’s. Don’t you worry – max temps the next few days will be 50ish degrees, and the easterlies will last all day.

Saturday suffers from the depth of the cold pool – easterlies spill over the Cascades. This lowers their punching power on the river. Expect 25ish all day from Iwash (Rooster) Rock to Stevenson with 15-20 near Viento. River flow yesterday was 61-106kcfs, river temp is 60F, and high temp forecast is 48F for Hood River.

The cold pool becomes more shallow on Sunday. Easterlies confine themselves to the easiest route west: the Gorge. Expect 30-35 from Iwash to Stevenson with 20-25 at Viento. High temp: 50F. Monday’s easterlies start at 40ish near Iwash and 30ish near Stevenson. They’ll drop to 30ish at Iwash in the afternoon. High temp: 51F. Tuesday starts with 30mph and fades to light easterlies in the afternoon. After that: lots of powerful weather systems headed this way and not much in the way of predictable wind. Fingers crossed the timing works out right for another one of those eastern Gorge days!

Wind: E 20-25 this morning, ENE 15 this afternoon, and variable to 10 overnight.

Sunday will be sunny and warmer. The FAF will be 4000′-8000′ early, 10,000′ in the afternoon, and 12,000′ overnight. Wind: variable to 10. Monday: Clear. FAF of 12,000′. Wind NW 5 becoming SW 10. Cycling

FREEZE-THAW WARNING: temps dropped into the upper 20’s or less on Saturday morning. Trails that are exposed to open air (not under a tree canopy) are likely to experience freeze-thaw conditions. If you ride on thawed trails, you will do significant and permanent damage. DON’T. There are trail builders seeking extra hands on seven additional miles of trail on Whoopdee. Contact HRATS for more information. See events section of this report for upcoming trail work parties on various trail systems. Don’t ride in the mud, or you’ll do permanent damage. Also, people will have to fix your messes rather than building you new trails. Just don’t, okay?No trails have closed yet due to snow, but we’re likely to lose the highest-elevation trails, at least temporarily, on the 25th . If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
