Gorge Wind Forecast

Good morning, everyone! Yesterday turned out just as planned near the Hatchery. Unexpected: the giant clean rollers. Most popular sport yesterday: SUP-foiling, by far. I think I saw 15 people doing the Tunnel 4 run at one point with another 10 or so wandering around looking for rides back to Tunnel 4. What a day! For Wednesday, we have an unexpectedly strong pre-dawn patrol (it was 29 at Swell when I woke up). Get it early for strongest results. Wait if you want less. Wait until tomorrow if you want something different; Thursday and Friday bring warm, sunny easterlies.

Wednesday, as I write this, is dark as can be. Pressures at 5am were 30.33/30.21/30.15 for gradients of 0.12 and 0.06. Strong offshore high pressure is helping with the wind. At 6am, it was 28mph from Viento to Swell with 15-18 (give or take) from Hood River to Arlington. Stevenson: cloudy and 5mph. Stay between Viento and Hood River for the best results today. Maybe Mosier. Expect Dawn Patrol at 25-28. Late morning: 22-25 from Viento to Mosier. Afternoon: 17-20 from Stevenson to Lyle and maybe to Doug’s. It would not surprise me if there was a mid-morning mid-twenties session near Rufus before an afternoon fade, but models aren’t showing that. It’s just a guess. River flow yesterday was 61-81kcfs (with great swell), river temp is 65F, and high temp forecast is 72F.

Thursday starts with E 15 from Iwash (Rooster) Rock to Viento. Midday: 15-20. Afternoon: 15-20 at Iwash with 10-15 at Viento and Stevenson. Friday brings stronger easterlies. Iwash starts at 20-25, fades to 20-25 early afternoon, and drops to 15-20. Stevenson: 25ish becoming 20-25 and falling to 15-20. Viento: 20 fading to 15-20 after midday. East of Viento, the wind starts light and rises to 5-10mph in the afternoon all the way east past The Dalles. As of this morning, Saturday looks light and variable. There’s some uncertainty in Sunday, so let’s leave it for now. Have an awesome day on the river! Wish I could join you – I’m working all day in Goldendale.

Local-ish Events

Please let me know of outdoor-related local-ish events. If you don’t tell me, I don’t know!

Regular weekly events: Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. There’s meditation with monks at 5:15pm (an hour) and 6:30pm (30 minutes plus a talk) at Yoga Samadhi in White Salmon. The Tri Club has their weekly workout at Mayer Park at 6pm on Tuesday. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. Paddle folks (OC/Surfski) meet at the Hatch Thursday evenings for laps. At 7am on Friday morning, there’s a run from Pine Street Bakery. On Saturday at 9am, there’s a by-donation outdoor group fitness on the 2rd floor deck about Ferment Brewing.

Regular bike rides (thanks to the Hood River Area Trail Stewards for collecting). Tuesday is Mountain View’s ride. Meet at 5:45pm on Post Canyon Drive where the pavement ends. Wednesday is the Evo/Kickstand all-ability, no-drop Post Canyon ride. 5:30 from the shop or join along the way. All abilities welcome. Thursday is Mountain View’s women’s ride. 5:30pm, Seven Streams Trailhead. No drop. Thursday is also the Dirty Fingers Post and Pint. 5:30 from the shop or later at Family Man. This is hardcore, race-pace. Saturday morning is the Mountain View road/gravel ride. Two hours. 12-14mph average speed. Starting May 6th, Oregon Ebikes has the women’s ride at 8:30am. Meet at Seven Streams parking lot for a 1.5 to 2 hour ride.

Cycling

Lots of perfect dirt out there right now – don’t ride in mud or you’ll do permanent damage. Speaking of mud, today’s forecast contains enough rain to turn Post (and maybe some other trails) into muddy messes. Hesitate before riding on Tuesday. Trails on private land that were previously closed due to fire danger (Hospital Hill, Underwood, Whoopdee) have reopened. No trails have closed yet due to snow. If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
