Gorge Wind Forecast

Good morning, everyone! I wrote yesterday’s forecast using the 00 run of the models. By the time the 06 run had completed (well after the forecast was done), the models changed their mind on the wind – they removed the westerlies and replaced them with not-westerlies. Sigh. We only do the best we can. Today’s starting out with westerly gradients, and they will stick around. The next two days, Monday and Tuesday, look very windy with the caveat that instability may have an effect on wind strength and quality. There are steps you can take to increase your chances of success!

Today’s the Maui Fire Relief Hood River fundraiser and community shred session at Northwave. There will be all sorts of fun activities and a raffle. To get raffle tickets ($5 each), go to the GoFundMe for the event and make a donation. This event is a POTLUCK, so BYOB and bring some food to share. The Community Shred Session takes place at 2pm (ish). Make a donation, get a rad streamer to show your support, and get on the water with all your friends! Spruce Baugher will be playing music starting around 3 or 4, the BBQ fires up in that period, and the raffle happens at 6pm or so. You must be present to win.

Early pressures on Sunday were 30.06/30.00/30.00 for gradients of 0.06 and 0.00. That’s just enough for 14-17 at Viento to start the day. We should see a period of 16-19 from Viento to Swell or Hood River this morning (there’s a community downwinder for the Maui event – meeting at 9:30am at Northwave, start 11am Viento). The wind dips midday thanks to heating – 13-16 from Stevenson to somewhere between the Hatch and Hood River. Afternoon sees temps held down on the west side by onshore flow while the heat low settles in to the desert. This drives the wind up to 19-22 or so from Stevenson to Mosier, perhaps to Doug’s. Stay close to Hood River for the best results. River flow yesterday was 91-152kcfs, river temp is 72F, and high temp forecast is 94F. And muggy. You’ll definitely want to be in the water!

Heat holes up in the desert on Monday and an offshore low drives cool air in to the west side. Gradients pile up as the temperature differential from east to west increases. Early westerlies will be 24-27 from Viento to Mosier. We’ll see a slow build to 27-31 in the afternoon from Stevenson to Avery. In the late afternoon or early evening, the wind spreads all the way east to Arlington and rises to 29-32. The only caveat is atmospheric instability – it’ll be most unstable out in the desert, so keep that in mind if you’re driving. High temp: 85F for Hood River.

A frontal system approaches on Tuesday. This makes for a really tricky forecast, as fronts lift the air. This can cause all sorts of chaos on the river. If we go by gradient/model forecast alone, we’ll have 30-35 from Stevenson to Arlington in the morning and 30-35+ from The Dalles to Threemile in the afternoon. It’s worth noting that models also have marine clouds all the way to Hood River all day long, so you may be better served to head east, and given the instability, you may be well served to head east early (yes, that’s against conventional wisdom). That said… models have significant instability all through the Gorge on Tuesday, especially in the afternoon. So, there’s a high chance of high winds (the Euro has gusts to 50 in many of the ensemble members), but there’s also a high chance of things falling apart in the afternoon. High temp Hood River: 72F. Arlington: 76F. Geez – you may need something more than a shorty!

Wednesday serves up westerlies in the mid 20’s east of The Dalles with clouds in the west. Thursday and Friday: light and variable, but that forecast contains a lot of uncertainty. We’ll leave it there for now. Hope to see you at Northwave at some point today for a community support of the community of Maui.

Cycling

As of July 28th, all local privately owned timberlands closed due to fire danger. This includes Underwood Mountain, Whoopdie, and Hospital Hills. Many trails will not have closure signs. They are still closed. Please respect the landowners’ wishes and stay off their lands. All trails on the 44 Road are now open. There is a fire near Boulder Lakes, and that area is closed. Plains of Abraham is open. That completes our reporting for the summer: all trails are now open! If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.

Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas

Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas: powdery mildew is making an appearance in local gardens. It’s a real PITA. You could spray sulfur on it, but there’s a better solution. Quite a bit of research has been done on milk. Yes, milk. Spray a solution of 40% milk on your squash, cukes, melons, calendula, and other susceptible plants. Do this weekly. You can alternate with a baking soda solution:1 tablespoon of baking soda, 1/2 teaspoon of liquid non-detergent soap, and 1 gallon of water. Don’t forget to spray the undersides of the leaves. Also helpful: pruning plants so they get plenty of air flow. Happy gardening.
