Gorge Wind Forecast

Good morning, everyone! A late consult call last night kept me awake for a bit, and so I woke up late this morning. And my goodness was it warm. But we also have a bit of wind to start the day and should have just enough to get you on the river later. Stronger, but rather unreliable wind is forecast for Thursday. Friday’s looking like a good one – strong, steady westerlies combine with cooler weather and stick around all day. Looking at the weekend, we still have model confusion. Don’t make plans yet.

But do make plans for this… Northwave, Big Winds, Doug’s, and other local shops are hosting a fundraiser to support Maui fire relief on August 27th. This is wind or no wind, and you can make a donation to support (by ‘buying a ticket’) on EventBrite. Wind plan: community downwinder from Viento. Community Shred Sesh in front of the Waterfront Park. BBQ. Raffle. No wind plan: swimming, floating, flat-water popups, demos, etc. Save the date, and donate: https://www.facebook.com/events/811547587096141/

Wednesday started with pressures of 29.99/29.92/29.91 for gradients of 0.07 and 0.01. Westerlies were generally in the 13-16 range all through the Gorge with up-and-down 17-20 from Viento to the Hatchery. Disregard areas east of The Dalles – they should fade. Models knock the wind down to 13-16 or less midday and bring it back this evening. Models hint at a 100 degree Executive Session (after 5pm) of 16-19 from Stevenson to Doug’s. River flow yesterday was 96-201kcfs, river temp is 73F, and high temp forecast is 100F.

Thursday cools off on the west side and stay hot in the east. Generally speaking, this is a good setup. However, there’s a disturbance storming in from the SW over the Cascades in the afternoon, and that’s going to drive down the wind quality. Models say Dawn Patrol at 17-20 from Viento to the Hatch. This quickly builds to 20-23 from Stevenson to Mosier with 12-15 from Lyle to Rufus. Early afternoon sees the influence of this incoming disturbance… Models call for gusty 23-26 from Stevenson to Rufus with 19-22 east to Threemile. Expect the wind to be… messy… If this system can clear the area early enough, the wind may settle back down in the evening and give us 17-20 from Stevenson to The Hatchery with 24-27 from Hood River to Rufus. Again, it’s not going to be the steadiest day you’ve ever seen, and if this system packs enough oomph, wind quality and reliability will really suffer. High temp: 94F under high overcast sky.

Friday’s the day I’ve been waiting for, and it may be the one you’ve been waiting for too! Offshore high pressure combines with a solid marine push to Viento and a stubborn heat low in the desert. Dawn Patrol opens up with 27-31 from Viento to Mosier with 10-13 in cloudy Stevenson, 13-16 from Lyle to Doug’s, and 22-25 from Avery to Rufus. By late morning or early afternoon, we’ll lose the west side clouds. This sets us up for 24-27 from Stevenson to Hood River with 27-31 from Mosier to Rufus and 22-25 at Arlington. Late in the day, Arlington also joins the upper 20’s club. High temp: 81F for Hood River, 87F for The Dalles.

Normally we’d talk about the weekend, but models aren’t making that easy. Or possible! Our normally reliable deterministic GFS is an outlier and brings back the heat; most of the Euro keeps us cool for the weekend. Anyway, it’s probably going to remain on the cool side, but it’s really hard to tell if it’ll be windy. There’s just too much variety in the models at this point. If I had to guess, I’d lean towards less wind rather than more wind. And if there is any wind, it’ll be focused west of Mosier. Heck, there’s even a possibility of easterlies. Let’s hold off on making any predictions, because they’d just be guesses. Take advantage of today, tomorrow and Friday. See you on the river!

Cycling

As of July 28th, all local privately owned timberlands closed due to fire danger. This includes Underwood Mountain, Whoopdie, and Hospital Hills. Many trails will not have closure signs. They are still closed. Please respect the landowners’ wishes and stay off their lands. All trails on the 44 Road are now open. There is a fire near Boulder Lakes, and that area is closed. Plains of Abraham is open. That completes our reporting for the summer: all trails are now open! If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.

Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas

Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas: powdery mildew is making an appearance in local gardens. It’s a real PITA. You could spray sulfur on it, but there’s a better solution. Quite a bit of research has been done on milk. Yes, milk. Spray a solution of 40% milk on your squash, cukes, melons, calendula, and other susceptible plants. Do this weekly. You can alternate with a baking soda solution:1 tablespoon of baking soda, 1/2 teaspoon of liquid non-detergent soap, and 1 gallon of water. Don’t forget to spray the undersides of the leaves. Also helpful: pruning plants so they get plenty of air flow. Happy gardening.
