Gorge Wind Forecast

I’m better rested this morning but still groggy from the previous night of almost-no-sleep. But I think my brain is better placed to process complex information like weather models! I hope! We’ll see a windy day east of Hood River today, lesser wind tomorrow as cold air really settles in, and a windy day again on Monday. Models hint at a rest day from wind sports on Wednesday as warm, but not hot, air settles all across the Northwest.

Taking a look at Saturday morning… we are in a post-frontal air mass with marine clouds on the west side and reinforcing cold air set up off the coast. That cool air keeps supporting the west side today while the desert heats. We will see some high clouds move in ahead of an approaching weather system. The gist of this is that pressures were 30.08/29.98/29.93 with gradients of .10 and .05 to start the day. With the exception of Hood River and the area near Rowena, speeds are in the low 20’s already. Models suggest the low clouds and marine air will infiltrate to Hood River today, so you’re best suited to shift east. The western Gorge will end up at 13-16 or less, mostly likely, after a low 20’s start and a short mid-morning bump to the mid-20’s. By late morning or early afternoon, you’ll find 25-28 from Mosier to Rufus with 22-25 near Arlington. Afternoon westerlies pick up to 27-31 from Mosier to Arlington with 22-25 at Threemile. Hang out at Threemile until the evening, and you too will have 27-31. Consider camping, because the best conditions will be Way Out East on Sunday. River flow yesterday was 160-201kcfs, river temp is 65F, and high temp forecast is 69F.

Cool air and low clouds make an unprecedented march as far east as The Dalles on Sunday morning. Record low-high temps are set to fall with highs forecast in the upper 50’s. This shifts the wind east. Launches between Stevenson and Mosier will remain under the clouds and will stay at 10mph or less all day. The eastern Gorge starts in the low to mid 20’s. Expect the wind to peak at 23-26 or so from Lyle to Threemile. Slightly stronger wind is possible, but given the extent of the cool air, it’s far from guaranteed. We’ll even have rain as far east as The Dalles in the evening.

Another cool, windy day is forecast on Monday, Juneteenth, but we’re going to add in surface-based instability. We also have a low moving (very slowly) towards Vancouver Island. Desert heating (minimal, but helpful) combines with replenished cold air in the west for strong afternoon westerlies. The day starts with 7-10 from Stevenson to Mosier and 18-22 from Lyle to Rufus. Afternoon wind picks up to 26-30 from Lyle to Boardman. Keep in mind that the unstable air mass is likely to impact wind quality and consistency. High temp: 59F for Hood River and 64F for Arlington. Take a jacket with you. Tuesday’s forecast is currently low to mid 20’s east of Mosier. Wednesday: light enough all through the Gorge to call it a rest day. Have a great holiday weekend, everyone!

Cycling

How much rain do you need to make brown pow out of dust? Somewhere between 0.1” and 0.25”. Maybe late this weekend or early next week! Post is clear of snow to the top. Dog River and Surveyor’s are clear. Bottle Prairie, 8 Mile, Underhill, Cedar Creek, Lower Cooks, and Super Connector are open and already dusty. Fifteenmile is rideable. Super Duper Connector is open. There is still snow on a short section of Surveyor’s between the Cooks Meadow intersection and Dog River. Nestor Peak is clear of snow. The USFS website says that Lewis River is open and clear. Falls Creek isn’t even close! The Forest Loop above Trout Lake is open as is the mixed surface Sleeping Beauty/8810 loop.

Cows are out of Hospital Hill. Dogs can return for their annual dose of ticks and poison oak. Always remember to consider gravel riding! If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.

Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas

Starting today, you have an unusual solstice-week opportunity. With the clouds and the chance of drizzle and the cool temps, you have a perfect opportunity to sow seeds. Replace your lettuce. Drop in another round of cilantro. Add some arugula. Carve out a little trench for some carrots. Water them, and you might just get away with once-a-day watering through Monday. It’s also a decent time to add some plants to your garden. They’ll prefer this gentle start to a harsh, hot-weather transplant. Happy gardening.
