Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

Friday’s going to be another gorgeous day on the mountain, and Saturday will be the same. Believe it or not, we’re back into a cool, wet period starting on Sunday and lasting for a good long while. After Saturday, you’ll have a brief shot at mountain sunshine on Tuesday and Wednesday before we plunge back into the cool-wet pattern.

Friday will be neither cool nor wet. The free air freezing level (FAF) starts at 0′ and rises to 6000′. Temps rise into the low-mid 30’s at 5000′. Light south or SW wind completes the picture. Clear sky sticks around until midnight on Saturday. Add high clouds overnight. The FAF will be 6000′ for the 24 hour period, but temps will rise to the mid-upper 30’s at 5000′. Wind: variable to 10mph.

Sunday starts cloudy and adds snow mid-afternoon. Snowfall picks up in the evening. The snow level will be 5000′ when the flurries start, 4000′ in the evening, and 3000′ overnight. About 0.05”-0.1” water equivalent (WE) is forecast for the afternoon. That’s a trace to an inch of snow. Overnight, 0.3” to 0.4” WE adds 3-4” new snow to the snowpack. Wind will be variable to 10mph.

A few more inches of snow are forecast on Monday as the snow level falls from 3000′ to 1000′-1500′. Wind will be SW 10 in the morning, W 25-30 in the afternoon, and W 25 overnight. Cool, sunny weather is forecast for Tuesday and Wednesday with the free air freezing level at 3500-4000′ or less. After that: back to light snowfall day after day. Winter is still here, apparently, despite the warm sunshine today and tomorrow. Get it before it’s gone!

They both hold at 20-25 for a few hours midday. Afternoon wind goes calm at Rooster (which will make for epic beach time), and drops to E 10 at Stevenson. High temp: 59F!!!!! Sunday starts calm. The wind picks up briefly to 20 at Stevenson and 15 at Rooster before going calm and then turning to W 12-15 from Stevenson to Rufus. Strong westerlies, 21-24 or so, are forecast for Monday afternoon. Models hint at additional rounds of west wind this upcoming week, but the weather will be chilly with drizzles.

Local-ish Events

Please let me know of outdoor-related local-ish events. If you don’t tell me, I don’t know!
The John Craig Memorial Ski takes place Saturday, 3/18 on McKenzie Pass. There’s a seed swap and plant sale at Rockford Grange at 2pm on Sunday the 19th. April 2nd is an end-of-season party at Meadows Nordic. April 15th at 10am is the “Run with the Wild 5k” fun run to support the Wildland Firefighter Foundation.

Regular weekly events: NK Studios in Bingen has a donation-based yoga class at 7:30am every Tuesday. Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. There’s meditation with monks at 5:15pm (an hour) and 6:30pm (30 minutes plus a talk) at Yoga Samadhi in White Salmon. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. Also: Wednesday Paddle Sprints at the Event Site at Noon.

Cycling

Many of the trails will be muddy. Please avoid them. You might be able to ride the Deschutes or Klickitat trails or Syncline, but you’ll be most successful on gravel. If it was below freezing the night before your ride, don’t ride trails that are exposed to the open air. Those trails will have freeze-thaw conditions, and you’ll do major damage. Consider gravel riding! If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
